In an effort to get as many top players as possible, Shell Houston Open organizers prepped the Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club like Augusta National. The players raved. Nothing attracts players like perfect conditions, and from February to late spring, that's pretty much standard operating procedure at this Houston-area course.

In the early '90s, Tour 18 Golf Club in Humble, Texas, created a fervor with its copycat holes from venues like Harbour Town, Augusta National and Pinehurst No. 2. Some of the original venues weren't happy and took legal action. Tour 18 survived and is still going strong. It's perhaps your best chance to experience the golf courses you thought you'd only see on TV.

It's fitting that a hometown boy from Austin, Texas, like Ben Crenshaw would plot a golf course that caters to the land's natural contours and bounces like his effort at Barton Creek Resort & Spa, the Crenshaw Cliffside course.
