There's no course in the Raleigh area with more of a family feel than Wil-Mar Golf Club, which has been owned and operated by the Allen family since it originally opened as a nine-hole course more than 50 years ago. Pinehurst No. 1 is an old gem in a new world of golf course technology. It's certainly been passed up by a century of newer, bigger golf courses. But the best golf course at less than 6,100 yards? Pinehurst No. 1 could certainly throw its hat into that ring. Unlike some other courses that date back to the early part of the 20th century, No. 1 never really feels all that cramped to the modern golfer. Playing corridors, while framed by Carolina pines, are still wide enough to hit the big stick.

Pinehurst No. 6 represents the first step in the next generation of golf at the renowned resort. Just 45 minutes north of Myrtle Beach, outside of enchanting Wilmington, N.C., is Cape Fear National. The 18-hole links-style course just opened in December. Cape Fear isn't a rush job, though. The vegetation on the course is well established, and the clubhouse is fully staffed and stocked. No matter how you play, it's a peaceful jaunt through a large expanse of yet-to-be-developed North Carolina coastline. Enjoy it while you can.

Tiger's Eye has long enjoyed a rep as the fiercest of the "Big Cats" at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Brunswick County, N.C. Recently it's gotten some competition, however, from the newly-opened Leopard's Chase, and anticipation over the upcoming unveiling of Jaguar's Lair.
