Dinosaur Mountain at Gold Canyon Golf Resort
About
The Dinosaur Mountain course at Gold Canyon Golf Resort is consistently rated among Arizona's top public courses. It offers a one-of-a-kind round in the Sonora. Panoramas feature at tee boxes. There's a test of skills, traveling upwards, downwards and all around Dinosaur Mountain, with tee-green elevations changing dramatically and fairways loping long.
While playing a round on the Dinosaur Mountain course at Gold Canyon Golf Resort, note the back-to-back signature holes, the fourth and fifth.
A round on the Dinosaur Mountain course at Gold Canyon Golf Resort kicks off on the 316-yard, par-4 first, which is tougher than it appears: The fairway heads uphill, narrows and leads to a well-guarded sloping green. The par-5, 514-yard third is one of three long holes; look out for the leftward dogleg, and then, go uphill to a diminutive multilevel green. Finish on the 366-yard, par-4 18th, which features fairway bunkers left and right to keep golfers from trying to wrap up too quickly.

Dinosaurs are extinct, this course ain't...
Finally, after nearly two years of living in the Valley, I got to play the Dinosaur course at Gold Canyon Golf Resort in east Mesa. Billed as the "Troon North of the Southeast Valley", the course is certainly in great shape (for late June) and the views are spectacular. And, at $50 for a 7 a.m. tee time, a steal. It's not as difficult as either Troon North course but it nonetheless challenges you on a good number of holes. The first few holes on the Dinosaur are its most scenic and difficult. Each one challenges you on club selection, strategy and putting. Once you get past the gorgeous 3rd, 4th and 5th holes, the course settles down into a more conventional parkland-style layout for the remainder of the front 9. The back offers some scenic elevated tee shots and a few really challenging holes, including the go-for-broke cut the corner or play-it-safe safe harbor, shortish par 4 15th hole. This hole especially rivaled the best of what Troon North has. The only downside of the course? It has you pay for range balls (huh, at a resort?), doesn't provide bottled water for free in the cart coolers and is a pretty fair hike from the likes of Glendale, Scottsdale and Peoria. Still, it's definitely worth the trip from any of those areas for a summer morning round of golf.
A course that has the WOW factor
I was in awe again with the course conditions, the unbelievable views and the value.
nice course
Course was in great shape for June and the price was right. My first time playing the course, you really need to know where to hit it. I hit a lot of greens in regulation but ended up a long way from the hole or off the green on the fringe or 2nd cut.
awesome course
Great views and layout tough greens but always in good shape
Great course
Not much to say that hasn't already been said. The dinosaur at gold mountain is just that...a beast! Fairways are pure, greens are quick, long par 3's shooting off a mountain, beautiful homes, overall great course to test your game!
Beautiful Views
This is one of my favorite courses. It is pricey during the winter months, but worth it. We saw 4 deer twice following us on the course yesterday. Great views, challenging greens. One of my favorites!
This course delivers!
Very friendly and accomodating staff at Gold Canyon. From the pro-shop to the guys cleaning our clubs, a job well done. Even the course staff were excellent. The cart person took very good care of us on a blistering hot day, and the marshall kept us entertained with local information. The course itself is a lot of fun to play, we even saw some wild pigs run out onto a fairway before moving on to the next tee box. Do yourself a favor if you haven't visited Gold Canyon, we highly recommend playing the 'Dino' course.
Interesting holes with great views
I enjoyed the course, but found it too long for me to play in the summer heat. However, the beverage cart did come by several times and gave us icy towels. The greens were quite undulating and super fast. I'd recommend it for good players and those who just want to enjoy the holes with the views.
Great Vistas
My only regret was the starter made a comment that the greens were very fast. This was not the case and for the first several holes everything came up short.
Marshall
The course was in great shape and the facility is very comfortable. Our 3-some played 36 holes and had a great time. However, the Marshall named Victoria made the second 18 holes very uncomfortable. She followed us on every hole and watched every shot. On the 17-hole she said we need to skip this hole and high tail it over to 18 and finish. There was still plenty of day-light but you could tell she wanted off work. As a paying customer she came across very unpleasant and pushy. I hope you future players don't have to come across Victoria.
Dinosaur
Awesome course. Best I'd played in the valley so far.
They don't care
We were very disappointed overall with our experience. It could have been a bad day for the staff but every person we encountered acted as if we were a bother. No one offered to grab our golf bags upon arrival. Our cart didn't have a key, when we asked for a key we were told you can't drive your cart until your tee time. The course conditions were very similar to other premium courses in the valley nothing that sets them apart in that category. For the price you expect to have solid conditions. Biggest issue is that there is simply no water on the course. You get water at the clubhouse and the turn. And one visit by the beverage cart and the Cary didn't " carry" water. It was 105 degrees. We shared this feedback with the clubhouse and were told it is disclosed on your golf now booking. So instead of listening and maybe doing something to improve the experience they simply didn't care. Because in their own words they have a full tee sheet. Keep treating people that way and I hope they don't in the future.
Excellent golf course
The view are incredible and green are in good Ian good condition.
Best golf coarse ever!
This coarse was spectacularly magnificent ! Heaven on earth . Took lots of pictures but does not do justice what so ever. Please play this coarse no matter the price , it is breathtaking we will be back next year!
Beautiful Course but Challenging
We're from Vancouver BC Canada and this was one of the nicest courses we've played on but during the day we played the wind was blowing extremely hard and made a difficult course even harder.
The facilities were fantastic! Greens were well kept and they had a great warm up driving range.
We definitely will be back to tackle this course again.
Best course I've ever played
This was the best course I've ever played. The views were amazing. Fairways and greens were top notch.
Arrived but no sign .....
saying it was Dinosaur Golf Course. I had to ask someone if it was the course. The bag drop girl was extremely friendly, really looked like she enjoys her job. The staff made you feel right at home. Although the course is short, don't be fooled, it plays way longer than the card says. I played the front 9 as a single from the blues an shot a 45, joined up with some guys for the back nine, played the whites and shot a 40. Great views from almost every tee block might distract you from the task at hand but the real work starts on the greens which I would rate right up there with Quinterra in speed & treachery. All in all well worth the drive.
The Dinosaur
Spectacular views from the mountains and really fun elevated holes keeps you on your toes. Fairways are like carpet and the greens are immaculate and wicked quick. Best to warm up on the putting green before heading our to your round. The food in the restaurant 'twas top notch as well as the service. I'll keep coming back.
Always play
Always play this course when in Phx. Love the views and condition of course. Greens are fast. It's a must play course.
Agree 100%....Had the very Same Disastrous Experience....told Mgmt (The General Manager of the Resort and He all but said..."Too Bad")...Never have to worry about me Ever playing there again......
Dear Mr. Jordan,
Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. I’m glad that you and your guests enjoyed the challenge and beauty of our Dinosaur Mountain golf course. I'm sorry that we missed you when you arrived to take your clubs and load them onto your golf car. We had a full field tournament on our Sidewinder course that just happened to be finishing at the same time you arrived and I’m sorry that you were missed.
Not Putting Keys in Carts - This is simply so we can stay organized and on time. Please be aware that we have two courses, 160 golf cars and both starting holes are a decent distance from our clubhouse. If we put keys in our carts we would have golf cars scattered throughout the property and ultimately we would fall behind on tee times trying to locate golfers. The carts are conveniently staged within steps of our driving range and practice putting green so there really is no need to drive your golf cart prior to starting your round.
As far as your concern about drinking water, we removed our unattended drinking water coolers from our golf courses 14 years ago. This was due to a junior golfer that died at another golf course in the valley. The junior golfer contracted the Norwalk virus from unsanitary drinking water coolers. In a post mortem investigation of 157 golf courses in Maricopa county, health officials determined that only courses that had bottled water or had drinking water fountains passed the health inspections. We made the decision to remove all unattended water coolers from our golf courses and allow guests to bring their own non alcoholic beverages. We do our best and go out of our way to inform guests of this policy both over the phone as well as in all email confirmations. I’m sorry if you missed noticing this on your email confirmation.
I hope that we were able to address your concerns. We take your feedback seriously and we do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Gold Canyon Golf Resort to regain your trust and confidence.
