There are few places where the description of art is more apropos than Pete Dye's Teeth of the Dog at the famous Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic. This popular seaside play -- known for its delicately carved ocean holes -- is still popular 40 years later. It's, arguably, the top course in the Caribbean and certainly on most serious golfers short list of places to play before you die.

While the Teeth of the Dog Course beckons golfers to visit the Casa de Campo resort in the Dominican Republic, the Dye Fore Course is pretty special, too. Prepare to be dazzled on the Dominican Republic's newest star, the Corales Course Puntacana Resort and Club. It is the shiny new addition to the 15,000-acre development in this vacation paradise. Arrive at the bag drop, and the setting is surreal: sparkling waters with waves crashing against rocks at such force that ocean spray rises high into the air. With the recent opening of the Fuego Maya Golf Course at La Reunion Resort, Guatemala's golf quotient has probably, at minimum, quadrupled. This is the first golf resort in this country of 13 million people, and the owners spared no expense.

Many new courses have appeared in the Caribbean since the Tryall Club track was built in the 1960s, but the Ralph Plummer design has kept pace with the competition. Today there are many rivals for the title of best golf course in the Caribbean, many of them fresh off the drawing board and built using the latest technology. In the face of that competition, most aficionados would agree that Tryall still remains one of the top 10 island courses.
