Canada's most prolific Golden Era architect, Stanley Thompson, also known as the "Toronto Terror" for his larger-than-life persona, designed one of his best at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course in Alberta. To see Duncan Meadows Golf & Country Club today, it's hard to believe that a little more than a decade ago it was a run-down layout badly in need of some tender loving care. For today, Duncan Meadows, which remains to many outsiders a bit of a hidden gem on the Vancouver Island Golf Trail, is a vibrant golf venue, bursting with character, fun and just enough challenge.

Going in, I had heard glowing reports from those who played Tobiano before me, and I wasn't disappointed. You can see the lake from every hole, so for the views alone, Tobiano is worth the trip. From a golfer's standpoint, however, the course also receives high marks.

Until recently, officials at The Westin Bear Mountain Resort and Spa in Victoria, Canada, downplayed the difficulty of the original course. Dundarave Golf Course at the Rodd Brudenell River Resort on PEI isn't overly long from the back tees but neither is it a pushover. The greens themselves are large and undulating and each one is guarded by bunkers. In short, it's an excellent option for golfer on PEI, every bit as good as the more expensive Links at Crowbush Cove nearby.

At Arbutus Ridge Golf Club, rounds begin with visions of recording your career best round and end with one of the most wicked finishing trios on any island not featured on "Lost." Despite those brutal final three holes, though, this is a course where it's really fun to hang around - whether to grab a meal before or after your tee time, get in some work on the range, or just shoot the breeze with the locals. If you're tired of stuffy resort courses, Arbutus Ridge could be your salvation.
