One year ago, the Padre Course at Camelback Golf Club in Scottsdale was a dust bowl. Something killed almost all of the fairway grass. These days, however, the fairways are lush and green, and Padre is back to what it was: A Midwestern-style parkland course located in the middle of the desert.

La Paloma Country Club in Tucson, Ariz., is 27 holes of frustration, wayward shots and lost balls in the desert. That doesn't mean this Jack Nicklaus design is overly penal or too difficult for the average golfer. It's just that as resort courses go, it's a far tougher test than your normal layout.

Ritz-Carlton hotels are designed to wrap their guests in luxury and comfort. So what was Jack Nicklaus thinking when he designed the 27 holes at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain? Okay, we're kidding. But at more than 7,700 yards from the back tees, no matter which 18 holes you play it's a challenge. Still, Nicklaus kept the average golfer in mind as well, Scott Bordow writes.

At first glance, Red Mountain Ranch Country Club looks like a course you can score well on -- it isn't very long, the landing areas off the tee are fairly generous, and there's hardly an overabundance of water and sand. But the mounding, borrowed from Scottish links courses, gives this course its bite, and the approach shots here are as difficult as any you'll face in Arizona, Scott Bordow writes.

You're going to have to play all the shots here and make some risky choices thanks to greens that can feature tough pin positions, Brandon Tucker writes.

It's hard to believe that TPC Scottsdale is in the midst of its 25th anniversary celebration. And while the legends of the Waste Management Phoenix Open have grown over the years, walking in the PGA Tour pros' footsteps on the Stadium Course here remains a fun experience. Playing with a forecaddie makes the day even more enjoyable, especially when you tee it up just after the tournament. You will also enjoy the conditioning and the hustle and bustle of bringing down all the grandstands.

If you only have time to play one course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club near Scottsdale, you can flip a coin. You can't go wrong with either the Cholla Course or the Saguaro Course. Naturalist-inclined golfers may lean toward the Saguaro, but scratch and lower handicaps in search of a top area challenge will probably give a nudge to the Cholla, Brandon Tucker writes.

For a golf course smack in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, The Legacy Golf Resort plays little like a desert course. Featuring immaculate greens and wide fairways, Legacy ranks as one of the best kept golf secrets in the Valley of the Sun. Its wide fairways and resort-style layout separate Legacy from the competition, Scott Bordow writes.
