This custom was similar to photos taken of our guys when they concluded a major firefight by pacifying the situation, the most famous being that one on Iwo Jima.

The main thing about such celebrations is that they should be respectful and BRIEF.

You then should surely know that Great Britain as well as most of their former protectorates have rules of etiquette regarding usage of the Union Jack virtually identical with those of the US flag.

There are almost no criminal punishment in either country for not following these rules, but a good citizen should want to follow traditions that have been set down by honorable folks, not the Klan as you insinuated.
