When will Tiger Woods return to golf on the PGA Tour?

Wednesday January 28, 2009 | 11:12:35 125 words, 5951 views

Doing a little poking around the Google, I found that one question dominates the national discourse. And it has nothing to do with the economy, Barack Obama, or even the Super Bowl. No, it has to do with Tiger Woods. Specifically, when will he return from his knee injury and golf again.

Well, the answer has not yet been given, but according to his Web site he’s been practicing at Isleworth Country Club and is making progress.

In his own words: “So far my knee has held up well, but I don’t know when I’ll be able to return to competition.”

We’ll keep you updated. But you can be pretty sure he’ll be back prior to the Masters. That’s the thinking here, at least.

WKW,

I have never read anything that fully describes exactly what type of surgery Woods had to repair his bad knee, only that it was "reconstructive."

A member of my club, an orthopedic surgeon and also a personal friend, has performed more than one hundred knee surgeries where a stainless steel prosthesis with teflon bearings is literally hammered into the bone after the damaged bone and cartilage is cut away.

His opinion is that AT LEAST one year is the minimum time of recuperation and rehabilitation for that type of surgery.

Also, any type of severe or acute pivoting on the afflicted leg is strongly discouraged.

A professional golfer has to walk about five miles during a round, and that is up and down hills, often over severely sloping terrain, and in and out of sand traps.

An ominous thing is that the good doctor has never performed that type of surgery on a person as young as Tiger; all of his patients being over fifty years of age.

Several bloggers and writers have expressed the thought that Woods will be back better than ever, one even said that Tiger might win a grand slam in 2010. Another confidently predicted that Tiger would surely win at least 100 PGA tournaments and 25 majors before he hangs them up.

To be realistic, if Tiger plays ten events this year and makes all the cuts, that would be a reasonable success. A win would be monumental.

Booger, why on Earth would you post such a comment?

Alex,

He basically had complete reconstruction of his left ACL.

Your friend's opinion seems right on, but I did just see that he's practicing "full bore" (check his Web site). Ten tournaments seems about right, but I'm willing to give Tiger the benefit of the doubt in that he has the best available everything for rehabbing the knee, including his attitude and work ethic.

I'd be willing to bet that Tiger will end up in the winner's circle a couple times this year and close the campaign with a major. Should be interesting.

So we decide who we want to play golf based whether or not they tip? That's absurd, on Sunday afternoon, I could care less what Tiger tipped... I want to see him on the golf course, for the sake of the game.

I don't even care to watch golf if tiger isn't playing, the rest of the field is boring compared to his playing
