Greg Norman on top of British Open; time for Chris Evert to worry?

Friday July 18, 2008 | 07:53:02 217 words, 9958 views

Greg Norman is leading the British Open. Yes, Greg Norman. The 53-year-old has shot two consecutive 70s in brutal conditions at Royal Birkdale to take over the top spot in the race for the Claret Jug.

“I don’t play much, I don’t practice much, but at the same time, there’s something about this event that stimulates you,” Norman told reporters afterward.

Norman has just played five times total in 2008, missing the cut in his three attempts on the PGA Tour. But with new wife Chris Evert, a wine business, multiple other business ventures and a crisp $100 million bill owed to his first wife, Norman, a two-time Open champion, has turned back the clock.

While thus far it is an amazing story, Norman still needs two more rounds to truly turn the golf world upside down. If the Australian somehow manages to make history, he’ll bypass Tiger Woods’ knee as the biggest story in professional golf this year.

The big question, however, is should Evert start to worry? Norman has shown in the past an inability to juggle success with marriage. Of course, Norman in the past has shown an inability in the past to juggle success with success on the golf course, so it should be an interesting weekend.

Regardless, however, an epic two-day show by Norman.

Norman is in excellent position, but it may take a minor miracle for him not to choke. Of course, I could see the other contenders choking just as badly on Sunday. So, yes, it should be an interesting weekend.

I am of the mind that jezebel Chris wants man-whore Greg to KEEP COMPETING. She wants him to realize some superiority to Andy Mills, the man she betrayed. Me people are so self-centered. That said, I hope the Shark wins. I think an Open Championship at 53 would go a mighty long way toward dissolving the demons of Augusta, the former major.

Watching Greg Norman play two par rounds in a row in such difficult conditions, you can't help but feel impressed. Having just lost $100 million, how did he even manage to get out of bed?

Anyway, I think even the Shark had stopped believing he was a real golfer anymore, but these two rounds have shown that, on his day, he can just about hold his own against the best, and in this case, out do almost all of them!

Who's everyone's money on for the weekend then?

By the end of the day, he was 1 stroke back. I'm happy to see him doing well and hope he continues the great golf on Saturday and Sunday. And like Bill said, this would be a great story.

ESPN had a poll tonight on what would be the biggest surprise sports story of the year, and Greg Norman winning the British Open was #1.

William,

NO! Greg Norman is not the biggest story in golf!! Hey, don't try to steal the glory away from me and all the attention of the people away from me with your, "breaking news" routine.

THE BIGGEST STORY IN GOLF is of course, in my blog and its about Tony Romo and his girl child Jessica. Now, notice you only have a few fans writing here, you have to pay admission to get a spot in my blog.
So there, it's settled,I'm the champ even though people call me a dumb chipmunk looking Pee Wee Herman Loser!

Chris, Michelle Wie is arguably the biggest story in golf at the moment. Why? Because she managed to put two good rounds together, which is a minor miracle these days.

Thank goodness that Greg Norman is playing well.
I have not been able to get enthusiastic and watch golf since Tiger was injured. His recent marriage to Chris Everett is of course merely a bonus...interest-wise of course. I have faith that Greg Norman will prevail and we will all be saved in the golf-watching world.

Chris Everet need not worry. Greg has grown up now and married a mature women.

If he would have gone "May", then that girl should worry. However, if he would have gone "May", his December would not delivered a final round lead in the British Open.

And after the third round, Norman is in the lead by 2. Oh my!

I hope he plays well tomorrow and doesn't blow up.
