Will sinking U.S. dollar keep Europe's best away from PGA Tour?

First of all, let me just say that I have to thank Fox News for making the “Make a statement with a question” headline a journalistic standard. You can totally get away with anything. Like:

“Will Tiger Woods quit golf to travel the world on foot solving problems ala ‘Kung-Fu?’”

Or:

“Is Barack Obama a secret Muslim terrorist?”

Or then there’s the shortened question headline that doesn’t have to be related to anything and that you can know is 100 percent false:

Michelle Wie: Nude?”

Thanks Fox News.

But the question of this headline does have some merit. Recently both Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia weighed in on the question of whether a sinking dollar will make playing for euros more attractive during the Qatar Masters press conference:

Q. This is purely a scenario, if the dollar crashes – the possibility it just might - is it just money?

ADAM SCOTT: I think for a lot of it, a big part of it is. That’s been a big part of the attraction of the US Tour all through the years. So maybe if they do bomb over there, maybe The European Tour, a few guys will come – I don’t know, it’s so hard. People have families in America.

Q. Adam Scott is playing more in Europe and if you did that would add more World Ranking points which would balance it up more. The prize money is not that much greater in some tournaments?

SERGIO GARCIA: No, because of the currencies at the moment, we have some events here in Europe that are almost bigger than some in the U.S. To me, that’s still not the big element. The money is not – when I play a tournament, I try to look for spots that I enjoy playing, spots where fields are going to be good, and that’s where you’re going to get the most amount of World Ranking points.

So I think some of the changes that are going to occur to The European Tour, some of the good changes that are going to happen, I think a lot more of those tournaments are going to get better fields, so it’s all going to even out. So I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s a new era for The European Tour and one that can be really, really exciting.

The dollar’s slump has made life better for traveling golfers coming from Europe to play courses in the U.S., that’s for sure. But what about for the top pros, who are seeing bigger and bigger purses on the other side of the pond??

It remains speculation, but as Scott pointed out - money talks. So the question remains: Could a sinking dollar sink the PGA Tour some day?

One thing that won't change that makes the PGA superior in at least one regard is the galleries. A lot of European Tour events have small galleries, where as practically every PGA event is sold out. It makes the tourneys more exciting - no matter what the purse size.

When my grandfather earned his 1st dollar he bought a frame for 10 cents and put the dollar in it. Now the frame is worth a dollar and the dollar is worth 10 cents. Such is life with fiat currency. Anyway the big money tournaments in the future will probably be in China, the Middle East, or Russia because they got all the dough. Europe is as broke as the U.S.
