It was 18 months ago that I spoke to long-time friends and filmmakers Christopher Vitiello and Jonathan Ochoa about their work on a documentary on Lorena Ochoa, the world’s No. 1 female golfer. This month, their work has come to life as Fox Sports Espanol has already televised Part 1 of their documentary, with Part 2 set to air on Sunday. For those looking to see the documentary in its entirety, it will air in full on Dec. 22 on Fox Sports Espanol at 9 p.m.
The two filmmakers have been on a two-year-plus adventure that started in early 2007. With ...

Few professional athletes have dealt with as many as up and downs before the age of 20 than Michelle Wie. But now, the young woman that has created so much positive and negative attention over the past several years has something she never really had before - an accomplishment.
Yes, in 2009, Michelle Wie will play on the LPGA Tour. Because she earned it.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Michelle Wie has earned a spot on the LPGA Tour.
The 19-year-old from Hawaii overcame a miserable start Sunday with a safe finish for a 2-over 74 that had her comfortably among the top 20 ...

Just thought I’d pass this little tidbit along. I was recently involved in a media story about a couple guys who hoaxed their way on to MSNBC. Because of this, I am now a golfer in Brazil:
Click the image to enlarge it. Here’s what it says about me: “The truth had been told: McCain’s false advisor had been exposed since the beginning, without much consequence, by another blogger, William K. Wolfrum, a golfer that happens to live in Brasil.”
This is from the magazine Veja, which is like the Time Magazine of Brazil. So now, I have about a million Brazilians ...

Golden Era Golf Course was a pleasant nine-hole run in Gilman Hot Springs, Calif. It was a nice challenge for golfers looking to get some holes in while enjoying the local area. And then the Scientologists came and took it all away.
For the most part, I treat Scientology like I do any other belief system. Ok, maybe I’m a little harsher with Scientologists, but c’mon, they believe in aliens, thetans, bigfoots and vampires, for goodness sake. They just bring it upon themselves. But generally, Scientology is not really worthy of much attention, if people want to give away their money ...

On August 8, the comedy world lost a unique talent when comedian and actor Bernie Mac died from complications from pneumonia. Mac was one-of-a-kind, and whether you were a fan or not, it was sad to see him go at the young age of 50.
And while Mac left his mark on comedy and in films such as Ocean’s 11, he also left his mark on the golf course - notably, leaving a good-sized dent on the back of Samuel Jackson’s head during a round the two played together in Illinois. We’ll let Jackson explain, courtesy of ContactMusic.com:
“Bernie was the only ...

By now, you’ve likely heard the main reason why John McCain lost the Presidency - Sarah Palin. Yes, it was all the Alaska Governor’s fault. She was a diva that was unaware Africa was a continent, didn’t know what countries were in NAFTA, was not positive that the Earth was a planet, thought pure methane was what mammals breathed, was a shopaholic who single-handedly raised the consumer spending Index two percentage points by buying $1.7 billion in new clothes, and on and on.
But you may be surprised to hear me defend Palin on this one. It wasn’t her fault McCain ...

Dear John Daly,
We’ve never met but I know you. Like you, I am an alcoholic. So when I saw the story of you being arrested at a Hooters for public intoxication, I thought I’d write to you. Because in a few months, I’ll celebrate my sixth year of sobriety. I have been on the journey to the bottom, and I am still and always will be on the journey back.
Calling you an alcoholic may be presumptuous and even rude on my part, but having been there, I am very aware that those who knew me were very much aware ...

Following Europe’s loss to the U.S. in the 2008 Ryder Cup, Europeans are reacting to it by cracking open a big bottle of whine. Here’s a fairly standard example from the Belfast Telegraph:
However, the disappointing thing which stood out was the bad sportsmanship of the American supporters at Valhalla Golf Club. This poor behaviour included mocking shots that went wrong for the European players and jeering as they walked between shots. I strongly suspect when the Ryder Cup is played in Wales in 2010 we will not experience the same hostility directed at the US players.

But my Mom is one of the lucky ones. You see, recently, we learned that my Mom - through the amazing ...

Last May, PGA Tour players went pink. Next weekend, they’ll do the same. “Is it some type of May Day celebration,” people wondered? Well, no, it’s actually much bigger than that. You see, this Mother’s Day, CHAMP Spikes will be running its second “Pink on the Links” program to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). And this year, golf fans can be more involved than before.
Yes, this weekend, expect to see pro golfers on all tours make Paula Creamer’s dream of a pink world come alive. The PGA, LPGA, Champions, European PGA, European Ladies, and Duramed Futures Tours will ...

There has been a war going on right under your noses. For 15 years now, golf has been under a sustained attack. Not a very effective attack, mind you, but an attack, nonetheless.
Brought to my attention by reader-golfer-warrior King Robert of Shankalot, I have learned about the Global Anti-Golf Movement (GAM). Started in 1993, on April 29, GAM celebrated 15 years of fighting the golf world. Among the accomplishments of GAM in that time:
1. Inclusion in this blog post.
And that’s only in 15 years, mind you. Imagine what the next 15 years will bring.
GAM has an actual Manifesto and ...

When Tampa, Fla., golf-ball diver Dwight Monreal woke up on Saturday morning, little did he know his day would include a brief and savage romantic interlude with an alligator. But, then again, who really prepares for that as well as they should.
It was at hole No. 13 at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club where the 62-year-old Monreal was grabbed by a gator, only to be tossed and turned before help arrived.
“We rushed toward the water and the gator let go of him,” golf cart attendant Matt Johnson said. “I like to think we scared him.”
So there you have it ...

By winning the Indy Japan 300, Danica Patrick has just smashed through a wall for women. The first female driver to win in Indy Racing League history, Patrick has shown that women can not only compete with men at that level, but beat them.
Which is why I believe a woman could someday win on the PGA Tour.
I know such thinking is sacrelige among these parts, but I have five main reasons for believing such a thing.
1) Annika Sorenstam played a PGA Tour event once. Just once. And she missed the cut by four strokes after shooting a first-round 71. And ...

Tiger Woods underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Tuesday to repair damaged cartilage. It is the second operation Woods has gone through on his left knee in five years. The surgery was announced on Woods’ Web site, and comes just two days following his second-place finish at the Masters.

It wasn’t long ago that I’d have bet 10 euros (US$14,555) that Tiger Woods would go undefeated in 2008. Then March came and it all went to heck.
Simply put, the last month has been one of disappointment for Woods:
He lost at the CA-Championship at Doral.
He blitzkrieg’d a photographer with obscene, verbal threats, giving Brandon Tucker an extreme case of the vapors.
He lost the Tavistock Cup individual tourney to J.B. Holmes.
He submissively took second place at the Masters.
He’s had to have lost a bundle on the stock market.
His financial ...

Congratulations are in order for Trevor Immelman, the first South African to win the Masters since Gary Player pulled the feat in 1978. It’s also the first Masters win for a South African since apartheid ended in the early 1990s, for what it’s worth.
Notables such as Ernie Els and Reteif Goosen couldn’t earn a Green Jacket at Augusta, but with Immelman’s win, South Africans everywhere are drinking sex on the beaches (or whatever it is they drink) to celebrate Immelman’s big, and surprisingly easy victory at the Masters.

With a few holes left to play yet, something has become perfectly clear: Tiger Woods was a huge disappointment. Unable to make anything resembling a charge, Trevor Immelman has put things on cruise control and will win the 2008 Masters, possibly by as much as half-a-dozen shots.
All praise must go to Immelman. While the media kept pursuing the angle that this Masters was anyone’s to win, that analysis was as wrong as could be. The South African has ran the table and watched as Brandt Snedeker and Steve Flesch faltered badly.
It would be folly to think that Woods will never ...

That Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of this era goes without saying. But even the best has his flaws. Today, as the final round of the Masters unfolds, the golf world will see if he can put a dent into what many consider his biggest flaw - that he is not a player that makes a last round charge.
Woods’s victories over the years have been spectacular, by all means. But there has been a noticeable trend of how he wins. He stays within striking distance during round one, moves loser to the leaders after round two, is within a ...

Masters opens itself to junior patrons
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Everything was gray at the beginning of the 59th Masters: The old champion who would hit the ceremonial first tee shot. The old course itself, the piney hills and hollows draped in a veil of fog.

In 2008, it seems Gary Player is on his best behavior following a controversial run which saw him tell the press that he knew of golfers that used steroids, while taking heat for his involvement with a golf course in Myanmar.
At the Masters, however, Player played it safer, even though his South African bias may have added some hyperbole:

I seem to have a hard time getting my left hand to lie down softly and properly on the grip. As a result, my right hand grip is off and I hit these 2 fairway over hooks as a result. Do you have any suggestions before I kill myself or worse give up ...

So you’ve been playing golf for a while and have never come close to scoring a hole in one? Well, don’t give up hope. It took Leo Fiyalko 60 years to get his first - and he did it while legally blind. At the age of 92.
“Legally blind golfer scores hole-in-one at Florida’s Cove Cay CC”
CLEARWATER, Fla. – A hole-in-one is rare on the golf course, but what are the odds of a blind golfer sinking one?
Leo Fiyalko couldn’t see it, but his golf buddies did – a hole-in-one on the fifth hole at the Cove Cay Country Club.
Leo Fiyalko ...

While PGA Tour golfers are enjoying Sunday’s Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, here’s hoping they take a moment to give thanks to the NFL for helping to lead them into an era where drug-testing is necessary even in golf.
Because this just in: PGA Tour players are pro-drug testing but horrified of the notion of peeing in a cup.
According to the Associated Press: “Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger was indignant over having a ‘collector’ accompany him into the restroom to watch him drop his pants and lift his shirt to make sure he didn’t have ...

If you can say one thing about New England sports fans, it’s this: They were a lot more fun to deal with when all their teams did was lose.
This is something I learned after writing a column for WorldGolf.com Magazine (“Tiger Woods just as dominating - but far less annoying - than the Patriots”). Now, while I admit it wasn’t my best piece of work (that honor goes to my recent blog post “Punch Russell Crowe in the head with proposed Golf Blog Contest!”), it was still a fun piece that included ample use of zombies - a staple of ...

Brazilians have a lot of stereotypes, and most of them are positive. They’re friendly, happy people is one of them. In fact, a study not long ago reported that 85 percent of Brazilians would classify themselves as happy or content. Which is amazing, because far less than 85 percent of Brazilians even have indoor plumbing.
But Brazilians also are a pretty self-aware group. They understand that their country can be a mess, but they love it anyway. And that love truly comes across during Carnival, the early February, nation-wide celebration that virtually shuts down the entire nation. There is a saying ...

First of all, let me just say that I have to thank Fox News for making the “Make a statement with a question” headline a journalistic standard. You can totally get away with anything. Like:
“Will Tiger Woods quit golf to travel the world on foot solving problems ala ‘Kung-Fu?’”
Or:
“Is Barack Obama a secret Muslim terrorist?”
Or then there’s the shortened question headline that doesn’t have to be related to anything and that you can know is 100 percent false:
“Michelle Wie: Nude?”
Thanks Fox News.
But the question of this headline does have some merit. Recently both Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia weighed ...

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem has a blog! He has a blog!!!
You can find it here, and let me tell you, it’s more entertaining than GolfWeek’s last meeting on how they should commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Let’s take a quick look at what ol’ Timmy has to say:
Hello and welcome to the second year of the FedExCup on the PGA TOUR.
AHHHHHHH!!!!! ShutupShutupShutupShutupShutupShutupShutupShutupShutup.
Ok, sorry, I just wasn’t ready for the FedEx Cup pimping to start so early.
We have redesigned PGATOUR.com to make it cleaner and easier for you to navigate. We hope you enjoy it, but let us know if ...

Jamele Hill’s latest column for ESPN.com is headlined with a question: “Can one awful comment change golf for better?”
The simple answer: No.
The last couple weeks have been a rocky one for the golf world, first with Kelly Tilghman’s “lynch Tiger in the back alley” comment/joke, followed by GolfWeek’s noose cover atrocity.
It is interesting how the moment Tilghman’s lynch comment escaped her lips, one phrase came up like a tidal wave: “This will lead to a long overdue discussion about racism and golf.”
That was basically what GolfWeek said it was doing in its latest issue. Even Hill managed to get someone ...

Above is the cover GolfWeek Magazine chose to illustrate the Kelly Tilghman “lynch Tiger in the back alley” comment, in all its cute “play on words” glory. The cover goes along with a pathetic story by Senior Writer Scott Hamilton that does little more than recap the situation, and throw in a comment by a noted African-American, apparently in an effort to say “no biggie.”
“Accept the apology and move on. We all say dumb things,” said Dr. Harry Edwards, a consultant of the San Francisco 49ers and a sociology professor at the University of California-Berkeley.
Tacked on to that, is an ...

When K.J. Choi ran away with the Sony Open to record his seventh career PGA Tour victory a couple thoughts ran through my head. First, it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. It’s great to see Choi’s success, as he truly is as good a person as he is a golfer.
The second was this: How much of the winner’s check would be donated to his church? Choi, you see, is a devout Christian. And a world-class tither. When Choi won the 2005 Greensboro Classic, he donated 10 percent of his $900,000 paycheck to a North Carolina Korean Presbyterian Church he ...

The fallout from Kelly Tilghman’s “lynch him in a back alley” comment about Tiger Woods is slowly coming to a close, as pundits, golfers, fans, and just about everyone has made their opinion known about Tilghman’s Golf Channel gaffe.
This is often the positive side of such remarks. It creates a dialogue. People talk, discuss, debate, often angrily. Some see Tilghman’s remark as pure racism, while others are willing to cut her some slack and rail against the horrifying culture of political correctness that obviously makes their lives hell.
Looking back, however, you see a big hole in the storyline - ...

Kelly Tilghman’s fast-rising career at Golf Channel has run flat into a brick wall after she brilliantly used the verb “lynch” along with the proper noun “Tiger Woods” in a sentence.
“Report: Golf Channel anchor apologizes for ‘lynch’ remark”
Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman has apologized after saying during Friday’s telecast of the PGA Tour’s opening event that today’s young players should “lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley.”
According to New York Newsday, a spokesman for the network said Tilghman apologized on Sunday’s telecast and has reached out to Woods’ representatives to express her regrets for the comments.
Tilghman, who played college golf ...

Ok, I’m pretty sure you’re all with me on this. Russell Crowe is an annoying idiot. So, that fact has been created, and now exists, and cannot be argued about.
So, what I am proposing to you the reader, as well as to big-shot WorldGolf.com management, is to have a golf tournament. One lucky WG reader vs. Russell Crowe. The winner gets to punch the loser square in the head. Think about that. Winning a golf tournament and celebrating by belting Russell Crowe and getting him to shut the hell up about “finding inner peace,” and, “It’s an art form that ...

Here’s a thought that occurred to me - today must be a great day for golf courses around the country. I mean, it’s January 2.
With absolutely no proof aside from gut instinct, I say with complete confidence that this must be a great day for golf in the U.S. At least in the non-snowed in parts like California, Nevada and Arizona, among others.
Because only heinous, sick-with-power bosses would make someone work on a Wednesday following Jan. 1 (cough, cough). Plus, if you’re going to do any business at all, may as well do it on the course and shake off ...
