After Phil Mickelson's win over Tiger Woods, Associated Press can't ignore FedEx Cup enough

Reading through the Associated Press coverage of Phil Mickelson’s stirring victory over Tiger Woods and the field over this Labor Day weekend, one truly comes to a simple realization - the AP is not going in for any of this FedEx Cup stuff whatsoever.

In the AP coverage of the Deutsche Bank Championship, the words “FedEx Cup” came up exactly once - and that was in a quote from Mickelson. If not for that, you would never know that PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem’s master playoff plan even existed.

Mickelson’s victory over Woods wasn’t stirring because of how it affected the FedEx Cup points standings mind you. The truly interesting part was that the Lefty of old had reappeared and left Tiger in his wake. This is of serious interest to any and all fans of the PGA Tour.

But still, whether you consider the FedEx Cup a contrived piece of nonsense, the most exciting innovation ever, or something in between, the fact is it does exist.

Just not to the Associated Press, it seems.

AP or not, I loved every minute of yesterday's shootout between Tiger and Phil which only happened because of the FEDEX cup. It needs some changes but the rules of golf evolve too.

Maybe more dramatic was the shootout at the LPGA State Farm Classic between Sherri Steinhauer and Christina Kim. Sherri was the last standing after an amazing putt for putt duel on the last 3 holes. Annika showed that her recovery is coming along with her strong third place finish.

I can't believe that not ONE of you "golf writers" even gave it a mention. You waste an incredible amount of time on spoiled teenagers but not ONE word on fine golfers who, I suspect, could humiliate any of you on a course.

I love golf. All golf. I can't hit it like I did 40 years ago but I play as much as I can. I wish I could hit like a girl.

So the FedEx Cup may have some issues to resolve. It needs to gain credibility to ensure the top players take it seriously and play in all 4 events (if it plans to continue the "playoff" type thing). It also needs to rethink the "retirement" prize. But for all of its faults it has given golf fans what they've wanted to see, and deserve to see, on a week in and week out basis. How good was the Deutsche? 3 rounds with Tiger and Phil together and both with a chance to win on Sunday, and one did. If Phil doesn't back out of the BMW the first two rounds would have them paired again. How good is that? If this is what a year end playoff type thing can produce in the future, ie seeing the top golfers of the year have to play head to head more than they normally would over a 4 week period, then Finchem's experiment is a success. Hard part is going to be convincing the prima donna top players who think a hard working year is 15 weeks out of 52 that for the good of the game and their bank accounts, playing a few weeks in a row at the end of the season is a good thing. I think it is, hell if I got to play 4 rounds 4 weeks in a row, I'd be in.

Well, I'm glad I don't hit it like a girl. I suppose we all have different standards.

Disappointed,

I forgot to mention a couple of other things. Here's a clue: No one cares about the LPGA.

I also have to ask you if you lament the fact that we're not talking about the Nationwide Tour. You said that you ". . . love golf. All golf," and the Nationwide Players play at a higher level than the pitty-pat golf tour, so why not focus on their exploits?

People fixate on the PGA because it is the grand stage; fourth-rate realms don't excite.

Disappointed, Smails just wishes he could shoot scores like those girls, as do about 99% of all male golfers. Alas ....

Shanks,

Speak for yourself. I'm an athlete, a designation with which you're obviously not acquainted.

I'm WKW and I'm a moron. I'm still trying to justify idiotic statements made about how the FedEx Cup was a failure BACK IN JANUARY. Rather than try to extact my foot from my egotistical mouth, i just keep screeching about how bad of an idea the cup is. I don't care if the Stricker story, Phil/Tiger on Labor Day or the chase at Cog Hill was interesting golf that wouldn't have happened with the Cup, I still declare this a failure. I don't actually do anything productive myself, I just screech about the shortcomings of others.
