Michelle Wie, Tadd Fujikawa have nothing on Bombi Aznar

Thursday March 8, 2007 | 07:21:10 am 355 words, 3418 views

As Michelle Wie’s convalescence drags out a little longer, the young phenomenon is learning some cold hard facts about the public - out of sight, out of mind. So as Wie awaits to heal her “backwards running” injury, someone like Tadd Fujikawa jumps in and dazzles all with his short stature and huge game.

Of course, the teens aren’t the only ones grabbing headlines. Fred Funk recently became just the second player to win on the PGA Tour after winning on the Champions Tour, bringing a tear to the eye of many an old timer.

But Funk has nothing on Bombi Aznar. Who in the hell is Bombi Aznar, you ask? Well, perhaps the better question is “who isn’t Bombi Aznar.” Because in the Phillipines, Aznar appears to be all things to all people, and one of the great two-activity athletes in history.

Aznar once teased a reporter that asked about his age: “I will sue you for that kind of question,” said Aznar, 77.

So who is Aznar? Well, from what we gather, he’s a brilliant golfer and a chess master.

We also know that one of his chess protégé’s won a chess tournament in Los Angeles last year. We know he can dance the cha-cha. We know he recently scored a double eagle at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club in Cebu.

Other details on Aznar are sketchy. It’s quite possible he’s more than one person. But for this blog, we must reject that theory. Because based on our rather lackluster research, we have come to a simple conclusion:

Bombi Aznar is the greatest Filipino of all time.

Golf Joke Time

One day at Barefoot Resort in Myrtle Beach, Father Kelly’s caddie advised him to use a three iron to reach the green.

“I think I can make it with a four iron,” said Father Kelly. “I’ll take a full swing … and pray.”

Father Kelly swung mightily, but the ball fell short into a greenside bunker. “Guess the good Lord didn’t hear me,” he sighed.

“Could be,” said the caddie. “But in our church, when we pray, we keep our heads down.”
