Heading north on Highway 395, making your way up from Southern California to the High Sierras and into Reno, one comes across the bucolic mountain town of Bishop. It’s a beautiful town where great fishing and other outdoor activities await those inclined.
Of course, Bishop is a town one must stop in for another reason - Erick Schat’s Bakkery.
Yes, Schat’s Bakkery (that’s no misspelling, by the way. It was built during the great “K” surplus) is to bakeries what Tiger Woods is to golf - the undisputed champion.
Walking through Schat’s yesterday, I had to walk out several times, as I just got overcome. The place was literally making me emotional.
And why not? They bake about 25,000 loaves of fresh bread a day, including their famous Sheepherder’s bread and 450 other products consisting of breads, cookies, and any other pastry you could desire.
For a notorious bread lover like myself, Schat’s is pure sensory overload in the best possible way. Don’t leave Bishop (or their location in Mammoth Lakes) without stopping by.
