Michelle Wie on top of these golf rankings, win or lose

Monday June 5, 2006 | 09:59:34 am 476 words, 2672 views

When great grandpa Wolfrum first came up with the concept for the Golfer Supremacy Rankings all those years ago, he did it dreaming of the day Michelle Wie would come into existence. She represents all he believed in: golfing ability, insane popularity and controversy.

Michelle Wie is a Golfer Supremacy Rankings kind of girl. Which is interesting, because aside from Sophie Sandolo, we can’t think of a single other female golfer to get very excited about.

Golfer Supremacy Rankings

1. Michelle Wie

Comments:
Lets be honest, right now Wie is going through some weird phenomenon normally reserved for the Beatles, NSYNC and TravelGolf.com blogger Shanks. Seriously, in Holland, the guy can’t walk down the street.

But with her appearance at the U.S. Open qualifier, right now Michelle Wie is reaching a new level of popularity. To put it into perspective: Wie is WAYYY cooler than Hillary Duff.

The odds are good that Wie won’t qualify, but that won’t hurt her popularity one bit. If Mi-Wi does finish in the top 18 and qualify for the men’s U.S. Open? The entire Internet will likely explode and every sports page across the nation (and many front pages) will run “Wie!” in 1,800-point lettering. Seriously.

2. Phil Mickelson

Comments:
Sure, Carl Pettersson won the Memorial, but Mickelson gets the higher rank here. Mostly because we just wrote a bunch of stuff in praise of fat people when Tim Herron recently won. So nice work, Carl, but we have nothing for you here.

Mickelson, on the other hand, comes out of the Memorial looking to all the world the top contender for the U.S. Open. Mickelson put together four strong rounds, even though he never made a real run at the lead. Still, a sign that Lefty’s game is coming together as it did before the Masters.

3. Seon-Hwa Lee

Comments:
It is official. The nightmare for golf writers is on, because the South Korean girls are just too good. Lee played brilliantly, yet, not even the Associated Press has a clue how to write about them.

The lead to the AP story: “Seon-Hwa Lee finally got the victory she’s been chasing.”

The inconvenient truth: Lee is 20.

The best quote they got from Lee: “This means a lot to me, because this is my first win on the LPGA Tour. I’m very happy.”

Not that there was much more shared at the press conference. Here’s the transcript.

Suddenly, Annika Sorenstam is Cher when it comes to charisma. Golf writers would love to see her start winning again. Even if not Annika, the LPGA definitely has some interesting players competing in their tournaments – they just rarely win. There’s only one player right now that can get away with that kind of behavior.

Random factoid: In case you missed it, you can watch Fuzzy Zoeller’s amazing hole-in-one over the weekend right here.

it's better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all. i am proud of her for at least going after her own dreams and doing her own thing rather than doing what the society expects her to do. and she should be proud of herself for beating out more than half of the men who entered the qualifying event with her. as you have said, not qualifying will not hurt her image at all. if anything it will only draw more crowd and more media at next year's qualifying event.

Sue you just hit the nail on the head! Who cares that she did not qualify, who cares if she has never won on the LPGA tour, who cares that she only has one victory in her glorious amateur career, she will draw more people and create more media hype and sign more endorsements and in the end that's really all that matters.

Seon Hwa Lee 977 after winning.
Michelle Wie 5,120 after failing to qualify.

Someone knows what the story is.
