Storybook weekend for Dakoda Dowd shines light on breast cancer awareness

The LPGA’s upcoming Ginn Clubs & Resorts Open at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla., truly challenged my cynical mind.

The story there is all about 13-year-old Dakoda Dowd, a golf prodigy who received a sponsor’s exemption. The story gets even deeper when you realize that Dakoda’s mother is dying of breast cancer.

Initially I looked at this event with cynicism. Perhaps it seemed too contrived at first. I even came up with a cynical line that I liked:

“Dakoda’s little brother Smurfy is unfortunately unable to attend as the factory he works at won’t give him the time off.”

That’s just wrong, isn’t it? What kind of jerk am I? I mean, the girl’s only playing golf. And the truth is, it’s a great promotion by the LPGA, for some very good reasons.

Whether or not Dakoda is the new Michelle Wie is unimportant. I’m sure, however, most will be surprised how well she performs for a 13-year-old. But if not, her performance is secondary. Or perhaps thirdary.

What’s most important will be the light being shined on Kelly Jo Dowd, who is dying of breast cancer. Cancer is one of those things that we all know is serious, but don’t really comprehend that seriousness until it finds a way to enter our lives. Cancer awareness can never be overdone.

So good work by the LPGA and good luck to young Dakoda. Now we’ll see if this weekend creates a group of “Dakoda Demons” to rival the infamous Wie Warriors.

Annika Sorenstam has taken Dakoda Dowd under her wing.
