Golf confessions (and more): By Tom Spousta
I got a confession to make.
It wasn’t until circa 1990 that I actually owned a set of golf clubs after moving to Sarasota, Fla. I started covering the game about that time, too, and went on to work for USA Today and write for the New York Times and have been fortunate enough to sit ringside at some of the great sporting events of the past 20 years.
Of all sports, though, golf rarely failed to provide the depth and drama that makes for such great theater. It’s man against course. Club vs. ball. Man against himself - the ultimate battle, if you really think about it. Lowest score wins.
OK, maybe that’s a little maudlin, but I think about that every time I tee it up, whether it’s at a local muni or storied major championship venue. Hey, those guys - and gals - play a game which I am unfamiliar with, but each round begins with a chance to set some kind of record, good or bad, personal or otherwise.
How can you not groove on that? And now, starting this week, I get to chronicle those exploits for WorldGolf.com and share insights with passionate golfers and travelers around the globe.
How can you not groove on that?
Heck, it’s why I finally bought that first set of clubs.
