How did you learn to play golf?

Thursday September 21, 2006 | 03:12:22 pm 436 words, 3876 views

Did you learn how to play golf using a Results Based Approach or a Theories & Assumptions Based Approach? What’s a Theories & Assumptions Based Approach? Well, when you learned how to play golf, you most likely learned to play from a friend, spouse or Local Pro who because they had more experience around golf than you did – you assumed their theories about how to hit the golf ball better, would work for you.

Even though at the same time they’re telling you that – “you’re going to have to get worse before you can get better!”

Now what’s a Results Based Approach?

A Results Based Approach determines if you’re improving based on Results that you can instantly see. We believe that Golfers should see improved Results right-a-way. No, not that instant 30-yards with your Driver junk you’re bombarded with in Golf Magazine and Monkey Digest. Though, you should see and feel the golf ball coming off the golf club better than it was.

For example, a Theories & Assumptions Based Approach goes like this – You go to your Local Pro and he/she says “You need to take your club more inside on your backswing and set your wrists at the top of your swing so that you can drop your arms down into the slot which will allow you to hold the angle through impact.”

What’s your chance of hitting some good shots while thinking of all these things? If you’re lucky - between 1 and 2 percent!

A Results Based Approach does one thing at a time. What one thing is that? I can’t tell you right now because I’ve never seen your Results. So, the first step we’d work-on with you would be based on using our Golf Made Simple Box to see your Results so that we can determine what that first thing will be.

Though many Golfers unknowingly continue to use the Theories & Assumptions Based Approach for years after first learning to play golf - and what’s even scarier is that many of these Golfers that continue with this approach are the same Golfers that are frustrated because they haven’t improved their scores or ball-striking skills in years! But, they continue to use the Theories & Assumptions Based Approach because that’s all they know!

Do you know anyone stuck in a Theories & Assumptions rut with their golf game?

Well, Mr. Solomon, you certainly exhibited wisdom with this piece. When you think too much, "paralysis by analysis" sets in. In fact, I originated a result-based method for teaching tennis for this very reason.
