My home club: Galloway National Golf Club in New Jersey
For over a decade I have been on a “mission” to play the top 100 golf courses of the U.S. and the world (I have played about 50 so far). On my trips to the U.S. (on average four per year during the last seven years) I was fortunate to play a number of the best and most exclusive clubs in the country. After being “America’s guest” for all those years I thought it would be fun to belong to a private golf club.
Last summer I started looking for highly reputable private clubs that also offer special memberships for internationals. A few offered offered me a membership, but it was a no-brainer for me to choose Galloway!
“Galloway is one of my best ever,” raved Fazio, who was given carte blanche to carve out the holes on the 200-acre property sans houses. The club is ranked as one of the Top 25 Modern Courses by Golfweek and among America’s 100 Greatest by Golf Digest. In September it hosted the USGA Men’s State Team Championship.
“In my opinion we are still under-rated as far as course conditioning and shot values are concerned,” said Mike Killian, the club’s director of golf.
I definitely agree with this statement, the layout is always in stunning shape.
This 18-hole Fazio masterpiece has numerous “signature holes.” One of them is number 17, a 250 yard par 3 with the bay and the Atlantic City skyline as backdrop. However, number 2 might be my favorite hole. This drop-dead gorgeous par 3 boasts a rollercoaster green that sits in the middle of marshland along the bay and offers mind-boggling views.
What convinced me to join were not only the outstanding layout, the immaculate course conditioning and the casual and friendly atmosphere. One of my requirements was that I wouldn’t have to make a tee time and that I could play quickly (an exception in a day and age where rounds of five-plus hours are becoming the norm). “On an average day we have about 20 players. Our course is never crowded,” explains Killian.
I became the first (and to this day) only international member. I am very proud and thankful to belong to such a wonderful club. Every time I play the course I realize how great it is and how honored I am to be a member!

I cannot agree with you more. My wife and I joined the club this year too. We are from New York and have a shore home in NJ. We were looking for a private club we could play that had the same characteristics you described. Galloway, we find, is that club.
Everyone there is friendly, helpful, and make it a pleasure to be there. The course as you describe is golfer friendly, yet challenging. The layout is exciting with beautiful backdrops, and the conditions are suburb.
Thankfully we don't have to travel as far as you do to play.
All the best
