Contrary to popular belief, Mickelson is lucky to be playing in the Tiger Woods era

As expected, Tiger and Phil playing together in the first two rounds of the PGA is getting a great deal of attention. We are all familiar with the idea that Phil is unfortunate to be playing during the same time as Tiger Woods; I’ve heard this statement for years and agreed, never really giving it too much thought.

But after reading an ESPN article about this weekend’s championship, something Phil said makes me think about the situation a little differently. “It’s been a fun challenge for me and the other guys to play against him, and he’s also pushed me to work harder and get better and achieve levels of success I may not have achieved,” Mickelson explained.

I’ve always known that Mickelson has elevated his level of play (as have Els, Singh, and many of the other top players) as a result of Tiger’s initial dominance, but today is the first time I have felt that Mickelson might not ever have won a major if Tiger hadn’t come along.

If Phil wasn’t forced to improve his game after constantly getting smoked by Tiger, it is very feasible to think that Mickelson would have continued to be a great talent with a lot of lower-tier wins, a larger manzier (or “bro” if you prefer) size, and a hot wife to show for it. Instead, Mickelson decided to swallow his pride, reign in his game a little bit, and stop blowing his chances. Had Tiger not come along, Mickelson might still be the best-player-to-have-never-won-a-major, and Ernie Els might have twice the majors he does now.

Overall, I have to stay that Sergio Garcia is really the player who is most unfortunate to be playing in this era. He burst onto the scene, drew a great fan base, and waggled his way to a few near-wins. But the fact is that Sergio is not as talented as Tiger or Phil, and his best chance might be behind him because the field has improved tremendously since Sergio’s showdown with Tiger. Even if Sergio works harder than all of the other best players in the world, I’m still not sure if I would pick him to win on a major Sunday.

Sergio's due man, he's 26. Phil won his first major at what, 33? I wish he'd won a few by now, but he's a lock for a couple by 30 -- especially if Tiger's next swing change has him playing left handed and gives him a few more "down years".

I'd like to see Sergio win one also, if not only for the sake of giving us another player who could seriously contend at each major. But back problems at 26 aren’t a good sign. I like Adam Scott's chances better at this point.

Thats a good point. If Tiger hadnt come a long I think Phil would be that 'lovable lug' forever whose fans just kept rooting, and he kept trying, and it would be a little more acceptable for him not to win.

Mr. Hux,
I noticed that you have not posted PGA Championship predictions from that Beardzilla chap. I found his foresight at the Masters to be nothing short of amazing. Did this guy play on tour, or was he a professional Vegas bookkeeper?
I enjoy your blogs, but give me my Beardzilla, baby!
Sincerely,
Andy

Andy,

Thank you for your loyal readership. In fact, I received an email from Beardzilla just this morning with his predictions. I plan on sharing his thoughts with the world once the tournament is over. This time, there will actually be direct quotes from the email I received, so you will get an even more in depth look into the Beardzilla's (formerly known as Beardinator's) psyche.

Stay tuned.

I rank Sergio as the fourth-best Spaniard ever, behind Seve, Jose-Maria, and (drum roll please)... You know him as the Mechanic and the Spafro, the ever-present cigar smoker, heeee'ssss Miguel Angel Jimenez! Sergio has less creativity than Severian, less chipping ability than Joe-Mary, and less of a work-ethic/psyche than Michael Angel.

I love the line about Phil swallowing his pride. Did you leave that dangling for us to laugh at? Phil swallowing only his pride.

Is Andy your brother, your caddie, your lover, your alias? What kind of suck-up is that? You'll find no suck-ups where RonMon is concerned, I'll have you know.

A Tiger-less era would have given us 1979-1996, all over again. Go back to 1962 and run to about 1978. Those 18 years without Nicklaus would have given us more Miller, Trevino, Palmer, and even some older guys we've rarely heard about.

Well, at least Sergio 86'd the Tweety-Bird suit for his PGA Championship wardrobe. If Garcia had won the British Open wearing that outfit, domineering country club wives would be dressing-up their husbands in that crap for years to come.
