Ginn sur Mer Classic round three: Is the end anywhere in sight?
From Mallorca to Miami and beyond, the weather is playing havoc with golf. Hardly surprising - it’s almost November for goodness sake and I’m already writing up my Christmas list. There’s no way the climate gods are going to take a weekend break either, which poses a minor dilemma at Port St Lucie. Are they actually going to finish this thing?
I appreciate the problems they’ve had, but I’ve been none too impressed either by the organiser’s reaction or the speed of the players. It’s all been too damn slow. There’s more stormy stuff on the horizon we are told, so there’s at least a slight possibility they will have to wrap this up at 54 holes. In that case Bob Estes and Daniel Chopra obviously look the handiest of winners. But if it goes the full stretch, which still has to be the favoured ending, the extra seven holes he has to play could do for Estes. Already Tommy Armour III seems to be suffering from the grind.
If Estes does start dropping shots, and nerves do for Chopra, it could turn into a bit of a free-for-all, especially if winds start gusting at 30mph as they are expected to in the afternoon. There’s a whole raft of interesting possibilities. Unfortunately I’m not sure Sean O’Hair is one of them unless he see the light on the tees, where his misfiring is really hurting him. A shame the likes of Lucas Glover couldn’t rise to the occasion either. The leaders gave these guys a chance to catch up, but they didn’t take it.
