Stanford St Jude Championship round three: Toms's task looks monumental

Sunday June 10, 2007 | 06:00:55 239 words, 1818 views

Today’s quick question is this: name the three players with wire-to-wire victories this season. Hurry up because Adam Scott’s about to make it four. You’d probably get Vijay Singh easily enough in the season opener and it’s not too much of a stretch to add Phil Mickelson’s performance at Pebble Beach. But I reckon Fred Funk’s win down Mexico way would stump a few. Interestingly, there hasn’t been a single one since February.

Of course there’s many a slip ‘twixt cup and lip, and Scott has done his best to dampen expectations, but he’s failed. This is a very stingy course and only one person, Marco Dawson, has hit the week’s low of 65 (not 66 as AP reports). With another fine day forecast, the greens can only get tougher Sunday so, depending on pin positions, even four under could well be a big ask. But that’s what David Toms needs just to overtake Scott’s present position.

The Australian has been known to suffer from the wobbles, but he is four from six for victories after leading Sunday morning and playing just the right kind of patient game for this tough course. He just needs to keep finding fairways like he did Saturday, avoid huge mistakes, and snatch those few opportunities that present themselves. Another round of two under - his worst score this week - should see him home and hosed.

Then he can curse himself for peaking a week too early.
