I don’t know about a good walk spoiled, but this is in danger of becoming a good tournament spoiled by the weather. That would be a shame considering the top of the table contest we have in store. Not the old guns you might have expected to dominate this event at the outset, but the young Turks bidding to take on their mantle.
I had rather expected (hoped) Rod Pampling would have faded away by now instead of sitting three shots clear. But a price of almost 2.5 going into the final stretch of a tournament which historically heavily favours the Sunday morning leader suggests the market thinks this leader is eminently catchable. Weather permitting, I’d be very disappointed not to see a strong challenge from either Adam Scott and Sean O’Hair, and hopefully both. There’s a few further back that must fancy their chances a little too, although I wouldn’t go further back than five behind the leader.
On the tournament stats it’s hard to put a cigarette paper between Scott and O’Hair. The odds favour the greater form and experience of Scott (5), but O’Hair (8) does have two sub-70 rounds to Scott’s one, albeit that one was the stunning 62 on Friday.
I have a feeling O’Hair will be the hungrier player on the fairways Sunday. But who cares anyway? If you think one of them is going to catch Pampling you can back both and come out a winner.
PS: Sorry to be so late with this. All I can say is, beware of grown-up daughters bearing bottles of wine.
