EDS Byron Nelson round two: Door opens a little for Kim and Singh

Anthony Kim and Vijay Singh, his playing partner Saturday, should be thankful for the peculiar law of golf that dictates the field stalls and bunches up on day two. It means they are still very much in with a shout when they might just as easily be dead and buried. It looked like they were when Sean O’Hair hit that eagle on the fifth. ‘Here we go,’ I thought. Instead, there he went, undoing all the good work with a couple of bogeys down the back nine.

It leaves Luke Donald with a one stroke lead after posting, along with Kim and Kent Jones, the best round of the day among the leaders. Kim is back on the TPC where he could only manage 70 on Thursday, although that may be down to his habit of poor starts. He is clearly a hot finisher and believes he has finally put himself in a winning weekend position. Mind you, a quick comparison of his stats with the leaders shows a big room for improvement. Even so, those who put money on his head (not to mention Donald’s and O’Hair’s) are already sitting on a modest book profit.

I just wish I was looking at Sunday morning’s leaderboard rather than the start of round three. Eleven players within three shots is a mouth-watering prospect. Saturday being moving day, though, someone could spoil the fun by separating from the pack. Could be Donald, or Brett Wetterich who’s got his eye well in. Their accuracy and GIR figures glow. It could even be Vijay, although he usually saves the best till last.

PS: Kim’s second round interview is well worth a read. First off he explains how he has a handy little posse of supporters who know next to nothing about golf, “so even when I make a bogey they’re clapping". He also talks of getting gyp from some older players afraid the young whippersnapper is going to take food off their tables. “I don’t want to say [they’re] insecure with their job, but [I’m going to anyway] I think they’re a little threatened … ” Would he name names? Nope.

I have spotted the odd suggestion that Kim himself is no angel. I gather he can be somewhat abrupt and lacking in a deeper knowledge of golfing etiquette. Pot calling the kettle black?
