PGA National and the wind from everywhere have them all flummoxed. Remember Robert (I’m gonna shoot five under) Allenby? They punished him for his hubris yesterday. Now there’s not a single player with an entirely sub-par week.
So three days in and we’re just one stroke better off against par than day one, yet with an entirely new leadership.
It really is a changing of the guard, from the old and wise to the lean and hungry. Mark Wilson, Boo Weekley and Daniel Chopra are no spring chickens, but they’re still chasing their first PGA win.
Wilson has never led going into a Sunday on the PGA Tour: best he can muster is one shot back in the Texas Open of 2005. But his score here is remarkable for the fact that his 66 on Friday included a two-stroke penalty he called on himself at the par 3 fifth (unfortunately I haven’t been able to find out the reason). But for that he would now be three shots clear of the pack. So is he going to pay for his honesty Sunday?
This is one of the hardest final day lineups I’ve had to figure in a long time. I think punters are too easily dismissing Wilson - he’s now top for putting and has shown himself very adept at both accurate driving and the neat approach work vital to giving youself an opportunity on the greens.
Chopra and Weekley are less impressive; their overall stats are hardly the profiles of a winner.
But the day is wide open to someone who literally throws caution to the wind and there are plenty of solid contenders, right down to even par if the Sunday wobbles get to our leaders and they come back to the pack. A lot will depend on the wind.
If I had to name names I’d say Steve Stricker or Allenby, but chiefly I see today as potentially a day for layers as players fall in and out of contention. Could be some rich pickings.
