84 Lumber Classic Round Three: Car crash at the top suggests a busy Sunday for layers

Sunday September 17, 2006 | 08:38:39 210 words, 1522 views

The jumbled mass of humanity (golfmanity?) atop the 84 Lumber leaderboard must have the layers cracking broad smiles Sunday morning. “Like a pileup of Ladas” is the most amusing description I caught on the forums. Bit unfair - there’s a few BMWs there.

Indeed there’s a few decent players all the way down to Vijay Singh, now six shots behind the leader, and in this company and these conditions you wouldn’t discount a winning charge from any of them. How about Rory Sabbatini, for instance, to repeat last Sunday’s smash and grab attempt? We all know what Vijay can do when he gets the wind in his sails.

With this in mind, at inordinate personal expense, I compiled a little table of how good the top ten or so players are at delivering their best in the last round. Click here to bring my table up hopefully in another window. It covers all regular tournaments where they went the distance (except the 5-round Hope) this season.

Steve Stricker anyone?

You’d have to have mystic powers to pick a winner from this lineup. It’s in the lap of the gods, the greens and the bottle factor.

So rub your hands and, if your particular nanny state permits, get stuck into the action Sunday.

Are there any posted Vegas (or any other board) odds for or against Wie making a PGA cut or qualifying for a PGA card (for next year or the years to come)? Where can they be found, if any?

I haven't spotted any GR (shout if you have, anyone!). The only ongoing specials I recall seeing relate to Tiger Woods. Wie making the cut now comes up within individual events of course. But if that's a bet you want to make I'm sure at least some the bookies would quote you a price if you asked.
