Nice article - BUT you forgot to mention that before Barry putted for his birdie on the "whip out" hole you made a tough ~15' left to right downhill putt for birdie as well.

Cool, Monarch Dunes is a new one to me. It sounds like it might be a bit too challenging for my comfort level, though. I've only been playing for a couple years. Something to aim for, right? I like that it's only 12 holes -- wish more courses had something like that -- but it'll take me a while to competently play a Challenge course no matter where it is!

Hi Mike,

I used to live in the Bay Area and enjoyed playing The Bridges. I am back in the UK now but still get their emails. Tough to take when it is getting cold and dark here!

It is certainly a good test and will punish wayward shots. I was just discussing the difference between US and UK pay and play courses with friends this week. I think the US courses are far more accomodating when it comes to getting around the course. They do not let you go out on your own unlike some UK coursesand generally take care of your clubs and buggies.

Sounds like you had a good day despite loosing a few dollars.

Athletes have no say in this matter. If young fans look up to you, you're a role model, whether you like it or not. If you don't, go and get a nondescript job in a nondescript office and build yourself a life off the radar, where you can be as boorish as you like. On somewhat less than you earn in pro sports, of course...

I hope Tiger doesn't let this aspect of his story get away from him. I think the occasional partially-stifled expletive actually humanises the icon somewhat but when you're bouncing a club into the gallery, you need to look a tad more apologetic than he did when retrieving it.

I've read some of the hate comments on other blogs regarding his mixed parental heritage. Many of these comments are outright appalling, quite likely made by anonymous, immature nobodies who still have not woken up to the fact that people (not only golfers) should be judged on merit, not on appearance.
With regards to TWs emotional outbursts it's quite strange: often comments are made that he is like a robot, and he gets criticized for that. On the other hand, once he shows some emotions in situations we can all relate to he is again criticized. Seems he is in a fix here.

I am a golf instructor and was fortunate to have worked some with Doug a few years back. At that time, he was on medication for anxiety attacks. He was actually put on the wrong type of medicine for a while which hurt him more than it helped. I have known Doug and his parents for several years and know they are quality people! Would not surprise me if it eventually comes out that Doug's problem was with those type of drugs.

Mike: In discounting the chances that golfers would turn to steroids or human growth hormones, you write that "although power and speed are both desirable attributes in golf, the biggest difference between top players and guys struggling to get their cards is around and on the greens. And steroids generally don't help you there."

All true. But there are other areas of the game where 'roids WOULD give golfers an unfair advantage. Keep in mind that "taking steroids" does not have to mean gaining huge amounts of unsightly muscle. Low doses could still help golfers combat fatigue, especially as the years rack up and it gets late in the season. Lower doses wouldn't have to result in an amount of muscle that would help a little guy rip the ball 330 yards off the tee, but they WOULD STILL BE AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE.

We recently installed our Ranger GPS System at Nkonyeni Golf Estate in Swaziland and while going around the course I retrieved a few balls from the dams and wide river on the course. Getting near the 18th I saw a dam and sitting in the sun was an 8 foot crockodile! I was horrified and the pro just said to me "I thought you knew!"
