Trick or treat: Don't pick up the mascot at The Witch Golf Club near Myrtle Beach
CONWAY, S.C. – The Witch Golf Club has restrooms for witches and warlocks, wicked witch targets on the range and tee markers made from swamp growths that look like witches’ hats. And there’s something else, a mascot in the golf shape named “Meer.”
Meer (pictured above) is a cat, of course, a 2-year-old rescue adopted by the staff at The Witch Golf Club, one of three courses owned and operated by Mystical Golf. (All three courses are highly recommended, by the way.) She got her name when people first started calling her to “come here,” which was shortened to “meer.” Meer, of course, like any cat, comes when she feels like it, not necessarily when she’s called.
She lives in the clubhouse full-time. There’s a litter box and food bowl for her in the office of head pro Graham Williams, who has developed an affinity for felines over the years. He grew up as a dog person, but was indoctrinated into the world of cats by his bride Sara, whom he’s been married to for 17 years. And when I say the cat world, it’s the cat’s world and Graham and Sara just live in it. Anyone who has cats can attest to that.
At home, the Williams family has more than one cat – way more, and we’ll just leave it at that.
“I’m the cat whisperer,” Williams said. “Now I love them just as much as she (Sara) does.”
So he’s well-equipped to handle a golf course cat.
Meer, of course, attracts attention from visitors, especially women. She can often be found on the counter or on her little chair in the golf shop. Just don’t pick her up. She doesn’t like that.
Meer isn’t the first cat to haunt the clubhouse, though. That honor belonged to “Smokey,” who roamed the roost for 19 years before he finally gave out. Their personalities, of course, are quite different. Smokey used to go outside; Meer is strictly indoors.
“We haven’t had any complaints,” said Williams, who is considering dressing up Meer for Halloween. “Everybody seems to think she’s pretty.”
