Opening of Salish Cliffs Golf Club in Washington special for more reasons than one
SHELTON, Wash. – Remember back in the late 1990s when they talked about opening a golf course a day to keep up with the demand created by new golfers entering the game? At the time, that seemed like it was good for the game, but what we’ve learned, of course, is that it wasn’t.
Golf courses weren’t really being created for golfers so much as they were for real estate developments, and golf will never be as popular as some had hoped it would become. So when a new course like Salish Cliffs Golf Club opens, it’s all the more bigger news.
The course, which is not far from Seattle and Olympia, will hold its grand opening next week when it brings Seattle native Fred Couples in for a special event. Couples has worked with Gene Bates on course designs in the past, so he’s already familiar with his work. The popular golfer’s presence next weekend combined with a dynamite golf course should make for a very enjoyable day.
What those golfers will find out is that Salish Cliffs wasn’t rushed. It opened when it was ready, and because it’s an amenity of a casino, there’s no pressure for it turn a profit, so it will probably maintain its conditioning and excellent service. Of course, I’m sure the Squaxin Island Tribe and Little Creek Casino Resort wouldn’t mind if it did turn a profit.
Head Professional David Kass had this observation: “I’m sure this will win best new course in Mason County.”
He was being facetious, of course, knowing that not only is Salish Cliffs the only new course in the county, but you’ll probably have to drive a day or so to find any competition in the category.
Still, Salish Cliffs could challenge for best new anywhere, no problem. As far as I could tell, there’s nothing wrong about it. Conditions are impeccable, the views are great and the golf course is just plain fun to play, no matter what set of tees you pick.
Simply put, Salish Cliffs is an example of quality, not quantity, which is exactly what needs to be opening these days.
