Trophies brought in to honor new Texas Golf Hall of Fame, inductees
As part of a celebration to reopen the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and induct its first class since 1996, the Hall’s new home, located at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, will display golf’s greatest trophies for most of the of October.
Starting with the conclusion of the Ryder Cup in Wales Oct. 5 to the end of the month, the reconstituted Hall of Fame in San Antonio will exhibit the original Wanamaker Trophy (PGA Championship), plus exact replica trophies of The Masters, U.S. Open Championship, British Open Championship (Claret Jug) and the Ryder Cup. Also exhibited will be trophies from the Texas Open, the State Junior Championship, the Texas State Amateur and the Joe Black Cup.
It’s the first time the genuine Wanamaker Trophy will be exhibited at length outside of Florida.
On Oct. 25, a new class will be inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, and the public is invited to come out and have pictures taken with the trophies for a donation of $20 to the Hall of Fame, which after being dormant for a few years, has found new life at historical Brackenridge Park. (You can read my review of Brackenridge Park here.)
Buddy Cook, chairman of the Hall?s board of directors, expressed gratitude toward the PGA of America and other golf bodies for the loan of the trophies. “Where better than at ‘Old Brack’ as part of our first induction ceremony.” Cook said.
The public voted for the new inductees through the Hall’s new website.
In addition to Brackenridge Park Golf Course during October, the trophies will be available for viewing at the Champions Tour AT&T Championship and its pro-Am party at the end of October and other receptions at various local events during the month, including an event at The First Tee of San Antonio.
Proceeds will benefit the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and The First Tee of San Antonio.
