Happy 50th, Emo Harris!

Saturday March 22, 2008 | 12:26:49 pm 176 words, 2410 views

I quick shout-out to my Brother-in Law—the Maharajah of Marblehead, Massachusetts, the Sultan of Sausage, the President-in-waiting of the Hair Club for Men–the redoubtable, irrepressible Emo Harris, who turned FIFTY just the other day.
I have numerous golf memories of Emo, he of the truncated backswing, and diving duck hook, but space constraints will allow just a single reminisence.
Several years ago I took him out to venerable Salem Country Club, near his home on Boston’s North Shore. Emo hacked, whacked and gacked in the standard fashion, though he somehow managed to bury a 3-wood shot into the hole on a 195-yard back nine par 3. Yes–an Ace for Emo, on a lengthy, challenging hole on one of New England’s most highly regarded tracks. He celebrated, of sorts, subsequently, with four consecutive 7s coming to the clubhouse, totaling a robust 108. I told him, “Hey, could be worse. 108 isn’t as bad as 107 for just 17 holes.”
Happy Birthday, Emo. I look forward to other memories, hopefully as vivid, on a golf course with you very soon.

Just getting to this entry Emo. As an attendee that day I can testify to the greatness that is Mr. Harris!

Fortunately for me, if not for Emo's ace Joel's singular memory of that day would my mini faux pas of a minor club toss in lieu of (another) bad shot.

Here I was looking to make the Zuckie comp golf team....I came prepared with an all time prowess! As I dreamt of sugarplum caddies, elegant fairways and endless buffets I knew all I had to do was break 95 and perhaps I'd take my rightful permanent place besides Coach Z and his trusty sidewinding sidekick, Hop Along Riviere, for the remainder of my golf playing days.

Instead Emo steals the glory and I display no guts as a disgusted JBZ worried for the remainder of that round if I embarressed him enough sufficiently in front of his Salem benefactor to the point of (his) no return to his annual comp round.

The epilogue? For me...no more invites to exclusive or shaken down clubs from the Purveyor of Priceless Golf. For Emo....the memory of a lifetime. For JBZ...a reminder that you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose....
