I planted my golf spikes firmly in the Georgia clay more than a decade past. But I’ve developed no allegiance to the Braves, Falcons or Hawks in all that time. My only local rooting interest is the Georgia Bulldogs, primarily because my oldest daughter is a freshman pup. Because as the saying goes, you can take the boy out of the Bay State, but you can’t take the Bay State out of the boy.
So these are heady times for New Englanders, with the Red Sox two games from another World Series title, the Patriots undefeated and seemingly unstoppable, the Boston College Eagles ranked second nationally, and the long-moribund, but now new-look Boston Celtics commanding the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. Some of my die-hard buddies might accuse me of being a fair-weather fan, but let’s face it: Fair weather is why I made the thousand-mile move due south back in ’97.
This blog must always keep a golf perspective. So I’ll interject the fact that I’ve managed to play about 50 of the 350 courses in my long-abandoned home state, including many of the most renowned venues. If I was to compile a Top Ten list of those courses I’ve personally had the pleasure to experience, I would list them alphabetically as follows: The Country Club, Crumpin-Fox, Farm Neck, Longmeadow, Myopia Hunt Club, The Orchards, The Ranch, Salem, Winchester and Worcester.
But that’s neither here nor there. For all intents and purposes, the northern New England golf season is dwindling away. But the Sox and Pats? Celts and Eagles? They are all in full swing.
