Is there anybody out there who is really buying Michelle Wie’s excuse that she re-aggravated one of her wrists and that was the reason she withdrew from the Ginn Tribute?
Get serious.
Feeling the need to follow-up on an earlier blog - one that now seems rather prophetic, I think - I have to say that Wie simply saw the writing on the wall at the Ginn. On the one hand, the LPGA has an 88-rule: Any non-tour member who shoots 88 or higher is barred from competing in LPGA Tour events for the remainder of the year. On the other, the Big Wiesy was poised to put up a monster number. She was at 14-over-par when she walked off the tee on her 17th hole (after a confab with her manager and parents). She had played 16 holes…you mean to tell me she could not finish two more?
Nonsense. Wie saw the likelihood that she would lose two more strokes - given that her round included double bogeys, triple bogeys and a 10 on one par-5, let’s say high likelihood of losing two more strokes - so she bolted to avoid being disqualified from other LPGA events this year.
She was in the media tent soon after her round, and promptly assured the press how much she wants to play next week’s McDonald’s LPGA Championship, for which she has a sponsor’s exemption. Oh, that wrist injury? “Yeah, you know, it felt good when I was practicing but, you know, I kind of like tweaked it in the middle of the round a little bit,” she told reporters. “So, [I’m] just taking caution measures, and I know what to work on.”
Does that sound like a serious enough injury to withdraw from an entire tournament? I kind of like tweaked it…a little bit ?
Folks, it doesn’t get more obvious than this. Rather than stand behind her abysmal round - or, hey, here’s a thought, try to make a few pars - Wie got scared. She was at the Ginn on a sponsor’s exemption and was surely a big draw.
If I’m Annika Sorenstam, I’m pissed off at Michelle Wie.
If I’m one of her legions of fans, I’m defending her.
But if I’m anyone with half a brain, I’m simply not surprised. Right now, Michelle Wie is just a name - one that commands far too much attention.
