O'Grady is an Idiot if he Thinks Technology Makes Tiger Woods Great

Thursday June 28, 2007 | 23:46:34 450 words, 25622 views

This has to be a cry for help because this statement is just plain stupid: “When Nicklaus and Palmer played, when [Ben] Hogan played and Sam Snead played, on a scale of zero to 10, they were a nine-plus,” Mac O’Grady said. “Tiger Woods is not even a one-plus.”

Then, this dolt has to go out and show his continued ignorance by saying: “The reason why [Woods] can hit it on the green is because he has square grooves,” he said. “He doesn’t have that, he’s dead. He cannot do it – it’s impossible. For him to go after Nicklaus’s records is cheating. This is like steroids.”

I sense a touch of bitterness. Actually, I sense a lot of bitterness. Truckloads of it. This Mac O’Grady, a former PGA Tour player that to his credit won two tournaments, took 18 swings at qualifying in Q-school before he made it on tour. He adds to his madness by slapping the Champions Tour and calling them “powder-puff” players when he is probably of the age that he could be playing on this tour.

This must be a case of “negative publicity is better than no publicity at all” (a statement by Donald Trump) or someone who hasn’t taken his meds today because it surely can’t be based on any facts worth quoting.

To declare that technology is what has made Tiger Woods the world’s best golfer, and perhaps the best golfer of all time, is just plain ludicrous. It’s like saying that if I played a Steinway, I’d be just as good as Glenn Gould. If I fired up a piece of composing software I’d be better than Mozart or if I just had a better paintbrush I’d be just as good as Michelangelo.

Tiger Woods is a great golfer because he has the most talent, not the best equipment. Every golfer has access to top-of-the-line equipment. What they lack is Tiger’s tenacity, drive, endurance, and killer instinct. He overcomes adversity. He plays consistently while those around him collapse. He knows how to manage a course and when pushed, he closes the deal. Yet, he is human like all of us and doesn’t win every tournament.

If you want to see someone with lots of natural talent and the best equipment, look at how well Michelle Wie is playing today. In her case it clearly isn’t the paintbrush but the painter that is the problem.

What a pile of crap this O’Grady is spewing. I guess that it’s okay in today’s media world though because Ann Coulter or Paris Hilton can say anything they want and it is still considered news too.

Bobby Jones once said, "Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half inch course: the space between your ears."

Yes, Tiger is immensely talented and benefits from new golf technology. But I believe the real advantage Tiger has over his peers is his mind.

Nike Golf should use his comments in a commercial.

Tiger is the best of his time, but he would win
nothing if he climbed into Dr. Who's time machine
and had to play against Snead and Hogan in the late
40's - early 50's. Mac knows what he's talking
about.

Not sure if you're a paid writer for this site but if you are, you apparently missed all your critical writing classes. What Mac wrote may not be entirely true. Tiger is obviously gifted. But your article fails to make a factual argument of any kind supporting Tiger. Rather, all the things you site are subjective. "he has the most talent"? First, thats an opinion that cannot be proven or disproven by anyone. You draw comparisons to existing players. You apparently missed the point. Snead and Hogan didnt have access to same equipment. They played the same courses that haven't changed much, unlike basketball when Wilt and Russell were playing what looked like a bunch of skinny white tenth graders. Yet they played the courses with wood drivers. Think. Apparently they'll let any idiot write articles these days.

These comments are erratic at best. Tiger is in better physical shape than Snead, Hogan, or Nelson ever were, not to mention Jones. Tiger had more exposure to international junior competition than any of the big three had. Tiger was better prepared for the pro game than any of the big three, and won earlier and more often as a result. Given his formal and informal educations, it seems ludicrous to believe that Tiger would not have adapted to the equipment of the day. What would have prevented him from even competing back then would have been the color of his skin.

Mac O'Grady has a profound awareness of the golf swing, balanced by an unequaled capacity for offensive diatribes. Let Mac be Mac, until he hurts himself. He will certainly contribute to the advancement of the swing, although I doubt that Tiger will look him up in the near or distant future.

Do not bring up the wo is tiger because of his skin, he married a white girl which gives the appearance that he dislikes the color of his own race. As far as his abilities, I turn the channel when he comes on as he never seems happy or smiles.
and Mac well I learned more from him than any other player when I caddied for him on the tour for 7 tournaments during my two years out there in 85 and 86. During the time I caddied for him he was working with Chip Beck, Jodi mudd, Robert Wren, Tom Seickmann, and they all went on to win tournaments shortly after. Does selfish tiger help others I doubt.

Bill,

I was almost going to buy into your comments about O'Grady but you brought up one of my taboo subjects - skin color. It's clear that you have an issue with Tiger because of his skin color. If not, why bring up the fact that he married a white girl and then comment that he "dislikes the color of his own race." You, my friend are showing your racial intolerance. You are the one that brought up race when it was never mentioned in my posting. Because of this, you totally discredit any comments you make on O'Grady. As to selfishness, Tiger donated $10 million to his Tiger Woods Learning Center. How much did you donate to help educated disadvantage youth?

Tiger versus phenom:

Tiger..."I am going out to win the golf tournament."

Phenom..."I am going out to have fun."

Poor Michelle is still in her 14 year old amateur mind set of "girls just wanna have fun."

Bruce,
Tiger has already helped the "disadvantaged youth" more than Nicklaus, Palmer, or Player combined. Just check the stats and you will see.

I am quite sure that modern golfequipment has helped Tiger in a way it has never helped the greats from the past. His drives would have been of the planet, a place where not even square grooves would have helped him. Mac defenitely has a point, you have none.
Tiger is just annoying to watch, period.. fact remains though that Tiger's adopted to the 'modern game' better than any other player at this moment in time

Mac knowledge base on the golf swing could very well be unparalleled. No one has compiled more research and data on the golf swing. Though you are certainly entitled to your opinion, Mac's is of more value.

played with Mac and Brandel Chamblee when they came up to the Vancouver Open. Yes Mac was "different" but he remineded me of another "different" golfer..Moe Norman. Mac uses lots of words Moe not many ... but both were pure ball strikers and our practise 18 was over 5 hours long because of all the players coming over to ask Mac for advise.. and he would always stop and demonstrate for them.

Preach it Mac ..may you live long and prosper..

i first played golf with mac ogrady as a jonior in
the pre qual for the hawaiian open, i asked him a
question where he was born(being young i did not
know who he was)and he came out with the answer
i was born yesterday and walked off and for the
next 9 holes he was totally arrogant, then he just
walked off the course. no thank yous no nothing, grant waite was his caddy this day and wasnt any better, not the sort of examle for an aspiring 15 year old even though i
had him by 3,he will be better of out of the game
completly golf is for gentlemen not half whit idiots
And J-DOG do you even knowanything about golf history
tell me how many putts your famed hogan or snead
holed on the last to win by one. less than 5 but
woods has done it time and time again, and the golf
courses they played were no comparison to todays
courses, you idiot.also hogan and snead made there own clubs like all pros back then but they only had a handful
of players who could win, unlike today were the whole
feild has a chance, just look at the winners records
from back then to now, half the guys who win now
