Another Golf Retailer Bites the Dust

I just found out that 2nd Swing Golf based in Minnetonka, Minnesota (my home state) declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 23rd. Founded in 1997, they’ve expanded to more than 50 stores selling used golf equipment. It looks like the end for these guys. According to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal “The company has retained an investment banker Morris Anderson & Associates of Chicago, and is seeking a party to buy 2nd Swing as an ongoing business or handle a shutdown".

As cutthroat as golf retailing has become, these guys are probably going to fall victim and be liquidated. When a company announces they are trying to sell themselves or close down, it can’t be good. They would have tried to unload the company privately and avoid the negative publicity associated with a bankruptcy.

If the financials were even halfway decent, a chain like Nevada Bobs, Edwin Watts, Austad’s or even Dick’s Sporting Goods would swoop them up in their time of need. Even for just the real estate.

Unfortunately, 2nd Swing couldn’t pretty up their balance sheet when they tried to do an IPO in 2003 (three times actually) and just a year ago they laid off 1/3 of their corporate staff and closed about 20 stores. Their demise shouldn’t come as a surprise with a flat golf retailing market for the last five years.

I alluded to the weak state of the industry in a previous March, 2006 posting Clubbuilding War Breaks Out as well as Dick’s Sporting Goods opening its prototype standalone golf concept store.

I’ll continue to explore the state of golf retailing in a future posting as well as on my podcast.

MN is my home state, too! Considering that MN is the state with the biggest increase in rounds played in the first 1/2 of 2006, the failure of 2nd-hand golf equipment company in that state seems to suggest that people ar eplaying more and either (a) buying new equipment , or (b) playing with their old stuff.

There is a 2nd Swing store here in Cary, NC which I went to last week. They had a closing sale going on and liquidating all stock. Unfortunately they were not selling much at all, even with a 15% discount sale going on. The reason was their prices were too high to begin with. Example: Titlist DT So-Lo dz balls for $24.95. Go down the block to Golf Galaxy and get them for $18. Their used clubs were basically discounted $100 off brand new clubs. No wonder they went out of business, they charged too much for used equipment and their new equipment was the same price as Dick or Golf Galaxy thus giving me no reason to shop there.

I had over $300 in credit at 2GOLF/2nd Swing. Is there anything I can do to get some of that back or some golf equipment?

Hey Char,

I'd suggest contacting 2nd Swing directly. My guess that if you can find a shop close to you, I'd go buy something of value. Even if it were golf bags. Otherwise, when they are closed your $300 credit will be worthless. That's the unfortunate part of a liquidation. Once they are gone so is your credit.

Readers have been asking if there are any rebates available from 2nd Swing. Based on an article that I found online, it don't think so. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4196/is_20060923/ai_n16749221

It appears that there are a lot of folks in the same boat that probably won't be getting a rebate.
