Tiger Woods, Mickelson pairing ignites sparks, Michelle Wie goes to Korea-will there be rockets? Also Ruletwentyone golf towel and the longshot

“You’ve got to focus through the ficus” and “concentrate on being great!”

Although these “Woods of Wisdom” are rhythmically repeated during the new Tiger Gatorade Focus commercial, it didn’t seem as if TW took the advice as he could barely control his “band-aid swing” for much of the Sunday Masters rally against Phil Mickelson.

Still, the finale averaged a 6.9 rating/12 share with CBS thanking it’s lucky stars that Phil and Tiger tied in the third round and that Masters officials were smart enough to realize that the pairing would exude fireworks.

Eight years later and the two top golfers in the world did not disappoint with Mickelson firing a record-tying front nine ‘30′ and Tiger playing “catch-up” until the end. Both players lost steam by the eighteenth, called it quits and hastily departed Augusta National before the green jacket was awarded.

The question is, what incentive did viewers have to stick around for the bittersweet climax?

Many were watching anxiously to see if 48-year-old Kenny Perry could redeem himself after his 1996 PGA Championship loss in his own home state of Kentucky which he believed took three years to overcome. Some fans waited to see if Angel Cabrera could muster up enough strength to win another major title after a virtual disappearing act after the 2007 U.S. Open. Finally, there were those who were wishing that Chad Campbell would persevere after his close call at the 2003 PGA Championship.

But Campbell was the first man out and, comparing his two second-place finishes smirked, “Neither of them (major memories) are very good. I’m probably a little more disappointed this time.”

Where tears welled in the eyes of Kenny Perry as he probably wondered how long it would take to shake off this defeat, Cabrera was excitedly trying on his new green jacket.

Since the Argentinian has his only two PGA Tour wins in the majors, could Cabrera’s next victory bring him even closer to an “Angel-Slam” or was this just the magic of Augusta?

Golf for Beginners also mentions the big South Korean welcome for Michelle Wie as she adds a little “Seoul” to the KLPGA charity event this week. The Ruletwentyone waterproof golf towel is evaluated and how can a golfer come back from a large deficit?

Also, what would you pay for your very own wax Tiger?

"Wiesy was supposed to play ProAm today, but she withdrew from playing just before the teeing off. It happened because KLPGA does not allow players accompany their caddies at ProAm. The rule was set because there were much complains on some players more focusing on studying the course with their caddies rather than playing golf with their ProAm partners. Wiesy insisted on accompanying her caddie, and did not come to the ProAm when her request was not accepted. It was a happening and some news reporters decribe the incident as Wiesy being too arrogant. I believe it is not a Wiesy's decision, rather a contract issue between IMG and sponsor and KLPGA"
"Anyway, she practiced today instead of playing ProAm."

Wie arrogant? Only known that for the last 5 years.LOL! As for the crowd for Wie in Korea? I would say 25-40 people following her.

Hmmm...practicing instead of playing the pro-am? I bet Wie ticked off a few of her sponsors!

At the very least, Wie should make sure she puts on a good show!

Good grief, how many stupid decisions can Michelle and the Wie Camp make? It is too bad that the KLPGA doesn't have a rule that if you do not participate in the Pro-Am, you cannot play in the tournament. The PGA has that rule, why doesn't the KLPGA? So, over the years Wiesy has pissed off all the gals on the LPGA and now she has done the same thing to the gals on the KLPGA. Who said, "money breeds contempt" Obviously Wie is rather stupid or uninformed what "slighting" an Asian will do for your reputation. My support for her is becoming less and less as she continually strives to self destruct.

Actually the ladies on the KLPGA don't like the no caddy rule, and will be very happy if Wie's stand forces the KLPGA to get rid of the rule.

From what I have heard the no caddy rule is in place for the Pro-Am too force the players to talk to the amateur partners. People were paying big money to golf with these players and those players were spending all their time with the caddies charting the course and ignoring their partners. Apparently Wie was supposed to golf with the head CEO who sponsored the tournament and presumably paid her a healthy appearance fee. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Steve,
If what you stated is true, then Michelle is dumber than I thought. Also, if she did in fact receive "appearance fee" and dissed the Pro-Am, she is really a moron! It seems that golf is one of her last priorities and I can only see bad karma for her and the Wie Camp during 2009. I doubt seriously if she will ever win a tournament during her career. She states that she does not plan to play golf after 30 years old, which will give her about another 5.5 years of competitive golf...with Stanford her priority. SHE WILL BE LABELED AS THE "WINLESS WONDER."

Supposedly, the playing partner that Bubbles stiffed was none other than the president and CEO of Lotte Mart, the corporation that sponsored the tournament, and the entity responsible for Bubbles' invitation.

This is another in the long line of abuses that Bubbles inflicts on the amateurs at an event.

Usually she just ignores them. This time she left the boss standing at the first tee. Not smart.

Somebody needs to set this spoiled brat down and teach her some manners because she sure hasn't learned any thus far.

She also doesn't like to wait for her playing partners to finish putting out before walking to the next tee.

Still, she was allowed to play the first round, where she shot a sterling five over 77, leaving her T75. I wonder what her apologists will say about her latest breach of etiquette.

Jim C,

Come on, man! How could you possibly know what the ladies on the KLPGA tour like or dislike?

I fully realize that you love Bubbles more than life itself, but for you to suggest that her impudent snubbing of the CEO of the sponsoring corporation will lead to the KLPGA altering their sensible ladies' agreement on how to treat amateurs is the height, or is it thedepth, of folly.

As we all are aware, bubbles break very easily. If the Wunderkind doesn't change her attitude, she is going to be toast. I understand that her welcome to Korea was very warm and they treated her very well. Hmmm, bend over Korea so I can kick you a little harder next time. To think that Alex has been right all these years and no one wanted to listen to him. You know Alex, Bubbles probably didn't even know who she was playing with in the Pro-Am. Stupid is as stupid does!

According to new report, lotte mart paid wie more than total prize of this tourney. Obviously there was even more special treatment for wie. Wie was allowed to use center of practice green while other players weren't allowed to use and 4 bodyguards accompanied her during practice rounds. As some writer mentioned, even KJ choi doesn't accompany bodyguard during practice round.

According to a poster on the Golf Channel site, Bubbles might have made the cut on the number, about ten strokes out of first place. And this in a field of only 108 second-tier Korean women golfers.

What about that, Jim C? That Bubbles is really on fire, isn't she. That'll be three events in a row where she barely makes the cut.

It's time for her adoring sycophants to start lobbying Bubbles for the Hall of Fame.

Obviously it would have made more sense for Wie to play in the pro-am.

She would have gotten her knowledge straight from the course and had "face-time" with the CEO of the company who asked her to attend.

Are mom & dad still her "managers" or did IMG have anyhting to do with this error of judgment?

Stacy,

When it comes to the gracious manners and the courtesy emblematic of Korean people, Bubbles and her parents are the exceptions that prove the rule.

A personal friend of mine who is also a member of my club, a gentleman of Korean birth and American upbringing, is absolutely confounded by the apparent crass disregard for the sensibilities of the Lotte Mart executive.

To this man and his wife and children, deference to a person's station in life, as well as respect for one's elders and general good manners are "de rigueur."

However, since Bubbles and her parents thought nothing of their insult to Annika two years ago, we should't be surprised at this latest breach of common courtesy by the Wies.

I just read that the KLPGA does have a rule which states if a player does not play in a Pro-Am, then she can not play in the tournament. Unfortunately, they made an exception for Michelle and allowed her to play in the tournament. This is just adding fuel to the fire. If Michelle feels that she is disliked on the LPGA, she hasn't seen anything yet. "Stupid is as stupid does."

Tucker,

Like Mr. Joe Cool, I am unable to verify. If this is true, it is not being well publicized, which would be unusual for Bubbles.

Joe Cool - your right, Alex has been correct all this time and accurately predicted the fate of Bubbles. You can't throw all that reward money at a child who has never won a single tournamant.

Alex - hummm, the rise and fall of Bubbles. Question is where exactly did it peak out for her before reversing and declining like an avalanche at an exponential rate to the point that she is now. My guess is when she missed the cut by a stroke at the John Deer Classic back in 06. I believe that it was the following year when she was coming in near dead last in the men's events (i.e. 84 Lumber Classic).

Q. This is your rookie year on the LPGA Tour. What are your expectations this year?
MICHELLE WIE: Well, you know, a lot of good things, hopefully. I just want to try my hardest and play my hardest, and hopefully, I can get a couple of wins. The main thing is I just want to have fun.

Pre-tournament interview at the Corona Championship. She sounds like a broken record. As always, she is there to "have fun" and not to win the tournament. We have been hearing this for the past six years.

I think Ochoa knows every single blade of grass on the course. The projected temperature is going to average 100F. Could heat exhaustion be lurking around the corner?

Lorena "birdiemachine" Ochoa shot another 65 to go 7 strokes ahead of Ms. Wie. At this pace Ochoa will be over -30 for the tournament. She is eating alive the par fives, something that MW has never been able to do consistently during her career. It looks like everyone else will be playing for second place.
