Is Q-School ready for Michelle Wie?
Left with no other options to secure their prodigy an LPGA Tour card, Team Wie has decided that Michelle is taking a crack at Q-School!
At her last hurrah, the State Farm Classic, Michelle actually had a chance to strut her stuff and prove to the world that she could place high up on the leaderboard, possibly even win! However, Wie left the trailer without signing her scorecard, earning a DQ and forcing her into the position in which she now stands, that is having to play the first stage of LPGA Q-School next week in California.
This may not be such a bad deal for Wie. This particular course (Mission Hills) is where Michelle, at just 13 years of age, first grabbed the spotlight so she may play confidently here. The teenager is also a bit older and has been through the grind of both PGA Tour and LPGA disappointments so, perhaps she has learned a bit more about competition to keep her strong during this grueling event.
If she prevails, Wie will be included in a group of top-thirty golfers who will then play the finals at Daytona Beach in December.
So to both Michelle Wie fans and Q-School participants, get ready for huge crowds and weeks of “you-never-know” because the media circus is coming to your area!
At least LPGA Q-School will get plenty of attention this year and Michelle Wie will finally be heading in the right direction!

Then she'll become what she always has been... and average professional golfer.
Sure, it's still unfair that she gets paid millions for having nothing but long legs and a pretty face... but there you have it.
Jennifer Mario should write her next book: "Michelle Wie, the making of a sponsor wh*re"
Stacy seems to think that the caliber of player MW will face in LPGA Q School is just as high as what she has faced when she played in PGA events. News Flash. Players who are trying to qualify for the LPGA are not as good as players who have already qualified for the PGA.
MW did fail to go the distance in some LPGA events the past 2 years--but she was injured, and she is better now even if she is not 100 per cent. What she did in the Canadian after a bad first round would probably be good enough to win at Q School.
Stacy probably thinks over 9 rounds that she would beat Michelle Wie because MW has trouble gong the distance.
What's that you say? Sponsorships and raw physical talent don't lead to results?!?! Well, that's not what BJ Wie used to think...
Seriously, she SHOULD breeze through. If she doesn't, she should go back to focusing on her college career, both academically and possibly NCAA golf. She's already been passed up by several other teens...
But, alas, this seems unlikely.

What should be so grueling about a 19-year-old female professional golfer playing nine--or perhaps thirteen--rounds of golf in a two month period?
Probably nothing at all, or at least there shouldn'be.
But remember, this is this is the fragile Bubbles you're talking about. She is no mere mortal.
It has taken her years to recover from a wrist injury.(or was it wrist "injuries"?)
And who among even the most hard-hearted Wie skeptics can forget the sight of 16-year-old Bubbles being carted off the course on a stretcher and whisked to a hospital in an ambulance suffering from heat stroke?
No, Jim C, there is a definite chance that "Q" school might be too much for Bubbles.
On that day at the Deere, the temperature was about 87F and the humidity was close to 50%.
Those figures are approached quite often in Central Florida in early December, so it would be wise for tournament officials to have the meat wagon ready in case Bubbles goes into one of her swoons.

On the flip side, if Wie isn't playing to her potential during that period, it could be quite easy to defeat her.
It might also be to her advantage to have a copy of the the Rules of Golf on hand.
I agree that Bubbles has a strong aversion to anything that resembles pressure, competition, or hard work.
But if she were to go into the tank at LPGA "Q" school, any credibility that she might still have would be destroyed.
Anyone with a lick of sense knows that Bubbles' employers, i.e., Nike and Sony, have exerted considerable pressure on the Wie machine to put up or shut up.
BJ and her agents beat the bushes trying to get Bubbles the six exemptions to which she and they have become accustomed, but they came up short, so "Q" school became imperative.
Anything Bubbles does that is even remotely positive will be looked upon by the Wiebots and the Golf Channel as a monumental achievement. The field at Mission Hills will be third-rate at best, so if Bubbles doesn't make it through, she should pack it in. No excuse will be valid.

If MW does screw up next week--then as long as she paid the larger entry fee of $5000 she gets another in a couple of weeks against a much weaker field. The system is designed so you can screw up once in prequalifying and it's no big deal. She certainly should not pack it in if she doesn;t make it through next week.
Wie critics have created a myth about LPGA Q School. According to these critics top 20 or so in LPGA Q School is a much more impressive achievement than multiple Top 5's in LPGA Majors. As long as Wie critics like Stacy act like making it through LPGA Q School is a big deal that MW has yet to achieve, her supporters are entitled to brag a bit if she passes a test that her critics say would be hard for her to achieve. Stacy is still writing like there is serious doubt that she will make it.
Why not go all out and say that MW will win? Don't you think she can? I sense a bit of doubt from your first sentence, "If MW dies screw up next week..."
BTW, I do believe that Q-School is a big deal (I also think the LPGA agrees with me) and I would certainly brag if I made it through.
I agree with you. However, remember that when I say "psychogenic," I refer to real physical pain that is induced by the mind; thus, it is a situation in which the individual is not consciously aware that there is no physical basis for the pain. As far as malingering goes, no, there is no way Bubbles would jeopardize her brand by consciously feigning injury at Q-school.
Anyway, I do think she'll qualify for that fourth-rate tour. If she didn't, it would be a staggering story.
I kind of feel sorry for whomever her playing companions will be. No doubt the media circus will be out in force., but only with her group.
It seems as though our pal Jim C is beginning to change his tune. Two years ago, he confidenty predicted that Bubbles would win both the Evian and the British Open back-to-back.
Now, he states that he is not predicting ANY wins for Bubbles. Neither am I. He does predict that Bubbles will finish in the top six at "Q" school, and that she will accomplish this feat in an "impressive" manner.
His statement that Wie critics are guilty of creating myths, coming from a Wie-wee of the first order, is truly one for the books.

Moreover, she easily would have earned enough at 14, 15 and 16 years of age for her card had the LPGA not had their silly 18 year old age minimum.
For Pete's sake, she was ranked #2 in the world at 16 years of age! She had 4 top 3's IN MAJORS by the age of 16! All this petty sniping is ludicrous. In the end, she will have a huge career, and all the little detractors, if you are capable of a shred of honesty and fairness, will have to admit your error.
I've read this entire thread and I see no "petty sniping", as you put it.
What I do see is Wiebot Jim C and now you who are cocksure that Bubbles will soon set the golfing world on fire, and a group of sensible people who are skeptical of a spoiled prima donna who has difficulty making cuts.
You'll have to excuse some of us mere mortals, we don't have the necessary ability to divine the assumption that Bubbles would have won the State Farm had she not had yet another lapse in judgment.
As far as your clairvoyance goes, I'll be happy to say that Bubbles has had a grand and glorious career AFTER she actually wins a few tournaments, not BEFORE as you have.
You Wie-wee's would have Bubbles in the Hall of Fame when she hasn't even made it through "Q" school yet.
Alex USMC 1969-73
Either predict that she won't make it through Q School or shut up.
I give Wie about a 98 or 99 percent chance of earning an LPGA card. What do you say?
For example, after the major mess requiring non-English speaking golfers to learn the language or get suspended, she quickly backtracked.
Michelle Wie = major turnout at LPGA events, no matter how good/badly she is playing...
Don't get so testy there, son.
It's strange that you aren't 100% sure that Bubbles will gain an LPGA tour card. Two years ago you were absolutely certain that Bubbles would win the Evian and the British Open back-to-back.As for Bubbles making it through "Q" school, since she has at least as much natural ability as anyone else in the field, and a huge amount more experience in tournament play than any of the others, I'd say that she SHOULD make it with flying colors.
I'd say that Bubbles has nine in ten chances of making it to the big show by her own merit, and not begged for exemptions. That would be a 90% chance, Jimbo.
After all, a significant number of the entrants are rank amateurs.
Alex USMC 1969-73
From their first round scores, it seems as though Bubbles' playing partners were not at all in awe of the mighty ear-ringed one.
Becky Brewerton shot a one-over 73, three shots more that Bubbles, and Shiho Oyama scored a nice 69, one better than Miss Wie.
As far as the "80 yards" difference in the driving distances of Bubbles and her opponents, you have got to be joking, right?
Rounded off to whole numbers, Bubbles' driving yardages in the last two LPGA events in which she completed four rounds were 246 yards in the Farr, and 261 in the Canadian.
Even at the higher figure, there is no way that Becky and Shiho could have gone as low as they did if they were only out 180 yards off the tee.
Probably the most overworked myth concerning Bubbles is her supposed tremendous length off the tee.
I saw her play in person only once, at the Publinx in 2005. Her mythical 300 yarders were actually more like 250 yarders. And her male opponents out-drove her by 30 to 50 yards every time.
Alex USMC 1969-73
She's doing exactly as she should. No one on this board predicted she wouldn't make it through Q-school. This is the great Bubbles, remember?
Speaking of which, given that this is the girl who was supposed to topple sex barriers and contend on the PGA Tour, how can anything less than taking medal honors and lapping the field in Q-school be considered an accomplishment? Is this what Wiebots have been reduced to, lauding Bubbles for her second-place position among journeymen female golfers?
It is to laugh.
Wasn't The Teenage Golf Sensation supposed to win multiple majors, be competitive against the men, play in the Ryder cup, break uncountable age-related records, etc, etc?
Now, the expectations are so low that all it takes for the phenom's disciples to bubble over is her not failing the first round of Q-school.
What a prodigy indeed.

Where are you? I see your idol shot a 74 today, so I suppose you're sulking a bit. Oh, don't work yourself up into a tizzy, though, because I'm not saying she won't make the cut. I just think it's interesting that little Miss Beat-the-men is currently being bested by three female golfers of whom I've never heard.
That shouldn't be a problem, now should it? Remember the Rule of 88? Heat Exhaustion?
When the going gets tough, Wie-ble wobbles...
I think Michelle Wie proved you wrong yesterday.
On a day when she hit two bad tee shots on the 8th
hole in route to a triple bogey, and hit only 5 of
14 fairways, her short game kept her in there, and
SHE SALVAGED A TWO OVER ROUND WITH A BIRDIE BIRDIE
FINISH. Whwn the going got tough, Wie played tough.
Yes, Bubbles really knows how to close the deal.
She finishes the sectional "Q" school eight strokes out ot first, six strokes behind an AMATEUR, and in the final round she was BEATEN by both her playing partners.
When the going gets tough, Bubbles gets, well, soft.
