Will the pairing of Tiger Woods, Mickelson and Scott in the U.S. Open inspire or disappoint?
Just when you thought the U.S. Open couldn’t get any more exciting other than the prospect of being the second major of the year, the powers that be placed Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott in the early pairings. That combination doubles or even triples an already huge fan base of Woods, adding local favorite Mickelson into the mix and further stirring in Adam Scott, the “ladies choice”.
This quixotic trio is bound to create pandemonium not only at Torrey Pines but also jam the internet airwaves, where deliriously heady viewers will do anything to catch a glimpse!
In a bold statement basically snubbing both ESPN and NBC, USGA executive director David Fay stated, “The heck with what TV wants. Let’s do what we want for the championship.”
What a concept! The betterment of the game finally takes precedence over corporate bigwig empowerment!
And so, the top twelve golfers in the world will be in four groups spread out at different times of the day. I’ll be curious to see if Woods lays low the first few days and picks up steam as the rounds progress, testing his knee for strength.
I’ll also be wondering if “Friday Phil” will come on strong, racking up birdies to make up for his more-than-likely short putting errors.
