Wie feeling "warm and loved", Sorenstam goes unnoticed

Friday May 25, 2007 | 10:45:18 288 words, 8077 views

As Michelle Wie gears up for yet another circus performance at the Ginn Tribute next week (and has just confirmed her third John Deere Classic), Annika Sorenstam’s sister, Charlotta, quietly took the lead in first-round action at the LPGA Corning Classic.

While Michelle talked to reporters of warm, fuzzy feelings for the people of the Quad Cities, Charlotta played one of the best rounds of her career, a 64, also tying (with Lorena Ochoa) the record for the best round of the season to date. Did anyone but her competition notice?

Perhaps Charlotta needed to pick up the slack for an injured Annika, who professes that she will be at the Ginn Tribute to compete against Wie, bolstering up the gate for what appears to be a very profitable, and highly visible event. Charlotta says she hasn’t been playing much because she has “been doing something else. Been working on my sister’s academy teaching and trying to run the place.”

Could this new venture be helping Charlotta’s game? The sister of the world’s number-one LPGA golfer mentioned that she has also been utilizing the services of Annika’s coach, head instructor at the Ginn Resort.

Does this signify a new beginning for the once invisible sister of Annika Sorenstam? Although round two was no comparison to the first, Charlotta is finally around for the weekend. Could one Sorenstam eventually replace the other at the top of the leaderboard? Would anyone realize it was Charlotta and not her sister?

Perhaps, but as Charlotta hopes for in future events, “I was hoping they would put a ‘C’. in front so everybody knew it was me.”

Could we possibly see the two sisters eventually “gang-up” on Michelle Wie at next year’s Ginn Tribute?

What a difference a day makes, Charlotta went plus one today and is five shots away from the leader. She gave up the lead as quietly as she took it yesterday.

Paula Creamer is in the mix after two rounds in the sixties.

Beth Bader is sniffing some rarefied air for a change (second round leader). Given her history, it looks like it will come down to a shoot out between a couple of Koreans and Creamer.

Chris Baldwin claimed Paula Creamer was better than Michelle Wie--forever, after Paula's second win in 2005. Now you seem to be making the same claim on behalf of Charlotta after she leads a tournament for one round. It was a great feel good story for Charlotta, but if I had to choose between Michelle and Charlotta as the circus act on the LPGA--Well I hope you can see why I think it would have been nice to praise Charlotta for what she has done without bringing Michelle Wie into the article and acting like Charlotta is oh so much better than Michelle Wie.
