Should Michelle Wie receive a mention when asking LPGA fans to vote for their favorite golfers?

Everywhere you look some association is busily handing out awards. Male athlete of the year has been bestowed upon Tiger Woods by both the GWAA and by the Associated Press, Lorena Ochoa was given the women’s honor by the same organization and the Sports Illustrated models even gave Michelle Wie the nod by pronouncing her one of the top “hotties” of 2006.

Are there any more accolades to be doled out before the start of the 2007 golf season?

The LPGA Tour has decided to pay homage to their own, in the same vein as the ESPY’s which gave Annika Sorenstam her eighth female athlete distinction. The OWL Awards are hoping that, with your help, they can bestow their own diamond-encrusted owl-shaped statue upon the LPGA golfers who have shaped events this year.

You can vote on your favorite shot, best quote or favorite outfit (although I can’t imagine how Natalie Gulbis didn’t appear in this category). Frankly I think the categories are a bit plebian but then again I got a kick out of the Sports Illustrated hand-outs so…

Instead of complaining I decided to come up with a few categories of my own.

For example, why not have a vote on which female athlete did the most to promote the LPGA Tour this year? Or, perhaps there should be a category on which LPGA golfer could possibly make a cut on the PGA Tour?

How about a question that decides which LPGA golfer is most recognizable when not playing in a golf event?

Well, the ONLY golfer from the LPGA that people know is Wie, thanks to Nike's endless promotion. Trouble is, they probably know her as "that hawaiian kid." No LPGA player has her own video games, no LPGA player has a hot blond Swedish husband who was a nanny with a swimsuit-posing past, no LPGA player has a learning center, a father named Earl, or a mom named Kultida. Fact is, no LPGA player is painted throughout the world with the same constancy as is Tiger Woods. Can any female player make a cut on the PGA tour? My guess so far is no, as Annika and Michelle have failed to do so. However, Michelle might make it one day, as might a stronger, tougher player to-be-named-later.

Wie a hottie at the age of 17? Boy, this is going to open up a can of worms in the already heated battlefield...I can see this becoming extremely personal and racially charged...

Anyhow, Ochoa did not win one single major, I guess her being named as Athelete of The Year is because of the lack of dominance by any other female atheletes.

Barry had a similar comment about Michelle Wie's mention as a Sports Illustrated female "looker". "She's 17 and just a kid so how can these models think of her as a hottie?

I know that men are attracted to young-looking women but this borders on criminal. Sports Illustrated should be embarrassed."

BTW, Michelle was also one of Time Magazine's 100 People who Shape our World. Category? Heroes and Pioneers.

Regarding the 17 year old hottie thing, come on of course she's a hottie. So are lots of 17- year-olds. It doesn't mean you should have sex with them, but to say she's not hot because she hasn't passed the magical (legal) threshold of 18 is hypocritical. Isn't it. Or maybe everyone's just become ultra paranoid because of shows like "To Catch a Predator".

Barry was a tad more miffed about the Michelle Wie "hottie" thing than I was. Michelle Wie was presentably attired in her golf gear (although I wonder if SI looked around for a more revealing pose).

I wonder how many of the girls shown on those "Girls Gone Wild" videos are under 18 and how many men purchase those videos not caring? Why don't authorities take those individuals to task?
