Mickelson "sleeping it off" after depressing U.S. Open collapse

Tuesday June 20, 2006 | 11:04:09 119 words, 3947 views

Phil Mickelson’s plans to play in the Cialis Western Open are now in cold storage as Lefty is sleeping off his recent U.S. Open breakdown this past week at Winged Foot.

It’s a sure sign of despondency but Phil confirms that he always spends a few days in bed after a championship tournament. I’m not sure that would be the case, however, if Lefty was victorious on Sunday. I think it would have been hard for Phil to settle down.

If he was sleeping he surely wasn’t watching CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman” as Geoff Ogilvy read the night’s “top ten list”.

My favorite? Number 9.

“I wish I hadn’t put all my money on Phil Mickelson“.

If I had Mickelfat's wife I'd be spending a few days in bed, but I sure wouldn't be sleeping much. :p

Phil calls himself an idiot and maybe his 2nd shot qualifies, but think about this with his drive. I know in my game (and I'm not even close to a PGA level, let alone a single digit handicap!), I can shank a 4 Iron as easily as a driver. The announcers kept saying "Just hit a 4 Iron", and that drove me crazy. Phil wanted to get down the fairway and his driver normally does not let him down. Phils day will come, just like it did in the Masters. I hope he can get his slam, but the British Open does give him fits, with his best finish 3rd in 2004. Exactly who did Phil "confirm" this to?

"Earlier in the week, he said he often stayed in bed for three or four days after a major championship to try to recover from the mental and physical strain.

Asked if he had something similar in mind after Sunday's bitter disappointment, he replied: 'Oh, yeah.'

Poor Phil. He's still my favorite golfer!

I see, thanks. You should have attributed that in your original blog.

Sorry. I thought the Sun Times version was a good link.

Scott,

Are we watching the same Mickelson? This is PHIL Mickelson, right? You've got to be kidding when you say his driver normally doesn't let him down; he hadn't hit a fairway all day! Moreover, driving accuracy has always been his Achilles heel.

Secondly, it's ridiculous to apply the limitations of your recreational game to the pros. They can hit fairways with a four iron at least 95% of the time.

The announcers were hoping that Mickelson would hit a 4-wood. And I agree with Judge Smails regarding the accuracy of the pros' long irons.

Mickelson's ability to hit a 4-iron center-fairway is similar to my consistency with an 8-iron.
