Last week we gave some tips on the mental game. This week (as promised) we offer a cerebral tip that everyone can use.

Common courtesy and decorum are not taught in most schools but if they were Barry and I probably would not have to discuss the basics of golf etiquette. This is not for beginners only…everyone should listen and wonder if they are guilty of these faux pas.

The LPGA is so busy being insulted by Michelle Wie playing in mens events, they aren't even aware of the rest of the world.

It's just too bad that the bleed over of golf awareness that comes with MWs popularity couldn't be denied to the LPGA.

They are busy trying to take advantage of her while at the same time ignoring her.

The whole mess is starting to turn people off from golf altogether. All the whining and moaning from both sides of the situation is making the public start to hesitate to take part in golf.
I heard some mothers telling friends that if that was the way their daughters were going to be treated then they would discourage them from playing. We know there are ladies and mens organizations but a lot of moms have no idea what is out there for their kids as far as golf is concerned.

I have no idea what the answer is but from watching and listening to people talk about MWs gender bender romp through golf, I get the feeling that there are a heck of a lot of men that are as insulted as the LPGA is only they don't like their domain being infiltrated by an upstart female.

Perhaps we are not nearly as civil and civilized as we pretend to be?

I've noticed many articles published recently with male sports writers chiming in on the MW effect. The negativity is there; and I'm sure there was a lot of negativity when Tiger won the Masters in 97. This level of discomfort will pass; and golf will go on with or without MW. The reason everyone is feeling uncomfortable is that we really don't know what are the highest Michelle can reach; some argue she could actually earn a pga tour card in the future due to her superb swing. Others think she will never be competitive against the men. It's not as if Michelle is getting strokes shaved off her scorecard, or she is teeing off shorter tees. It's not cut and dry debate; and that is what causes people to be upset.

I really believe that MW will achieve great things on the LPGA tour; she is truly an amazing golfer. For now it seems that we are both caught in the crosshairs of the LPGA.

And to all of the parents out there who have little "Wie's-in-waiting", my suggestion is to continue to nurture your kids' abilities no matter how disenchanted you are with the treatment you "may" receive from people who just don't get it right now. Upstarts are what make our world unique.
