The PGA of America just named Corey Pavin, 49, who has played in the Ryder Cup Matches three times, to serve as captain of the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup Team.

Pavin and his 12-member team will travel to Celtic Manor in Wales Sept. 28 to Oct. 3, 2010, to defend the Ryder Cup, which the Americans - led by Captain Paul Azinger - won in September at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Pavin, winner of the the 1995 U.S. Open, played in the Ryder Cup Matches in 1991, ‘93 and ‘95.

In naming Pavin, the PGA ended speculation it would call on Azinger to again lead the team.

Can someone - anyone - tell me why the PGA of American needed to fly an army of their honchos, plus Cory Pavin, to New York City to make this announcement at Tavern on the Green? And they hired the Rockettes to dance there!? Good lord, is this what PGA members pay their dues money for, so Jim Remy and the brass can party it up in Manhattan during the biggest economic downturn in our life-time? Rounds are down everywhere, sales of golf stuffs are down, golf travel is down, course openings are at a virtual standstill ... yet the PGA bigwigs need to fly to the big apple to take a bite. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns.

I think Pavin is a bit to subdued and passive to be a good choice as captain. Don't get me wrong, he is a great player and a super guy, just not my choice for leadership.
