Annika Sorenstam wants to end her career with a bang, which would include her 11th major at this week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open, but she doesn’t expect her competitors will make it easy.
As she heads into her final major, Sorenstam told The Associated Press that a win this weekend in England would be special.
“I would love to win here,” Sorenstam said. “It’s the only major that I haven’t won two or three times. If I could win this week, then I would say I’ve pretty much achieved everything that I possibly can.”
The field is stacked against Sorenstam, with competition expected from her younger rivals. Defending champ Lorena Ochoa is looking for her second major of the year, Paula Creamer has won three titles this season, and Karrie Webb, Juli Inkster, Se Ri Pak and Laura Davies are also expected to contend.
Sorenstam won’t have to worry about Michelle Wie, though. Wie is skipping the major in order to play in the PGA Tour’s Legends Reno-Tahoe Open.
Sorenstam was critical of Wie’s decision to skip the major, but Wie isn’t concerned what her critics think.
“People are going to write hateful stuff about me and that’s fine with me. … Good rounds and low scores can solve everything,” she said.
Wie has yet to make a cut in eight tries on the PGA Tour.
