Five could win FedEx Cup going into Tour Championship

The PGA Tour’s inaugural FedEx Cup playoffs come to a close this week at the Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club. Five players have a chance to win the playoffs, with Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker both having the possibility to become overall champion with a victory this week. Phil Mickelson needs to win and have Woods finish lower than a solo second. Rory Sabbatini and K.J. Choi are also in the hunt, if pretty far off the pace …

Meanwhile, the tour is allowing players to practice on the majority of holes at East Lake Golf Club for two days prior to the opening round. The announcement comes after the tour initially said players would not be allowed to practice on the greens, which have been damaged by severe heat this summer. Players won’t be allowed on the second, 13th and 15 holes …

In the TravelGolf.com This Week podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Chris Baldwin about a day in the life of Tiger Woods.

Just to add another twist in the FedEx Cup's tale, I think it would be "strangely fabulous" if Rory Sabatini could pull a rabbit out of the hat and win the FedEx cup. According to the calculations made by the guys at the PGA Tour all that Sabatini has to do is win and hope that the three leaders right now have a terrible four rounds.

What that largely translates into is that Tiger finishes poorer than 13th and we bank our hopes on Phil and Steve Stricker messing it up a bit. Sabatini may not be half as pretty as his namesake from the tennis world but he has got what it takes to irk Tiger and come to think of it a lot of people have managed to do that including someone like Nick Faldo.

For all the drop outs and lack of love expressed for the FedEx cup, the final event, The Tour Championship seems poised for a good hot finish and I am not even talking about the weather in Atlanta yet. Talking about the weather though, from what we are getting to hear it seems that players have not been allowed on to the greens because of the terrible shape that they are in due to the unbearable heat. Tiger has already raised an eyebrow after not being allowed to practice on some of the greens. The Pro Am has been cancelled and you can be sure that Tim Finchem is now desperately hoping for a fabulous finish from all the players in contention to tide over this new problem at the season ending event of the inaugural FedEx Cup.
