The CN Canadian Women’s Open kicks off today at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alberta. Top American women’s golfer and U.S. Open champion Cristie Kerr will try to defend her title against Michelle Wie, world No. 1 women’s golfer Lorena Ochoa and Brittany Lincicome …

At TravelGolf.com, Brandon Tucker writes about the Royal Links Golf Club in Las Vegas, which pays tribute to the famous British Isle links courses by recreating 18 of the British Open’s best holes.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here...and say Wie-Wee won't make the cut again this week.

What do you think?

John D,
I agree with you since she is 10 strokes back after the first round. I think Bubble's bubble has pop!!! Her game at best is mediocre and I do not see any improvement in 2007. It will be interesting to see if she joins the LPGA in October. I say she will not join since she still thinks that 2008 will be a repeat of 2006. At this time I feel Michelle is clueless about what she is going to do with her career.

Question, will she not need to qualify to join the tour in 2008? Cause I don't think she's going to make it on the money list.

Glad to find a Wie blog as they are drying up. At some point Nike and Sony will lose patience when Earrings Wie doesn't make it into the weekend. MW's most common word in her interviews is "obviously". What's obvious is that she's mediocre at best. When the other big names that have won this year and are scoring in MW's ghetto neighborhood, they at least admit that they're playing like crap. But MW insists that she's playing great! except for a couple of bad holes. Nobody is forcing MW to make a fool of herself in these post poor play round interviews. But she refreshes us with new great excuses. Talk about the entertainment dimension that MW adds to the LPGA.

Uh-oh,

+1 today already through four to put her at +5 overall. She will likely need to shoot par or maybe 1 under to make the cut this week, and so far birdies have been rare for her. I do believe that she would have to qualify at Q school to become an exempt player and get a card for next year, but I am not sure about that. The way she is playing now, she very well may fail to qualify. I wonder if she still has visions of making the Ryder cup soon and playing in the Masters?

But for a couple bad holes a round I too could play on tour....hahahahah... Does anyone else question how she got into Stanford. Cmon for someone who has been doing interviews since she was 12 you'd think she'd be able to not sound like a 12 year old...It is truly a joke that she steals the spotlight from deserving players. I mean at this point who cares what she shoots, she is never in contention and may never be again. And why is it now newsworthy whether or not she makes or misses the cut on the lpga? Women younger than her have done that many many many times before.

OUCH....

Bubbles just bogeyed #6 and Parred #7, she is running out of holes if she is going to make the cut. That puts her at +6 overall with the projected cut at about +3. Stanley and Putt4par will not be happy about this, back-to-back missed cuts. It is not over yet, but not looking good for Bubbles and her Wie-wees at this point.

Bingo-Bango,

Another bogey on #8 and she is now +7 with 10 holes to play with the projected cut line at +3. This puts her at an impressive tie for 135th. Obviously, that wrist is acting up again (that must have been one hell of an injury).

Lance R and smudge,

There might be hope for Bubbles yet.

My wife said that she is six over par after ten holes in the second round.

In recent LPGA events, the cut line has moved higher with the afternoon flight.

If Bubbles can somehow lower her score to four over, and the rest of the field backs up enough, she could make the cut on the number as she did in the LPGA championship.

Hadrly what one should expect from a prodigy, a phenom, and the future of worldwide golf.
But it would be an improvement over her last outing.

Her devoted fans and also the skeptics like me must be really befuddled by the direction Bubbles' game has taken.

Judge Smails says that her injury and thus her tumble are psychogenic. Perhaps, but I'm not so sure.

Bubbles is still a teenage girl, and those of us who have raised those mysterios creatures know all too well of the physical, psychological, and emotional rollercoasters that teenage females ride.

Who knows? With the maturity that will come when she enters her 20's, she may evolve from this funk and turn into a force on the LPGA tour. Let's hope so.

Couple of quotes from Bubbles regarding yesterday's events: "Obviously I'm very disappointed by the score. I didn't feel like I shot that. I had two bad holes," "I thought I played very consistently except for the two bad holes. I missed a lot of birdie putts. I guess I wasn't focused. I'm just going to have to come back, make some of those putts, set the pace early and make a lot of birdies." And, finally: "I had a couple of stingers. It was a little cold so that didn't help, but it was OK."

Obviously, in her bubble, this will be considered a "confidence builder". Luckily for her she, won't have to - like - worry about the Canadian cold and having to get - like - up early for the rest of the weekend. Too bad for Nike, all that money spent, and nobody to ..... the expensive suits during the weekend....

I predict that one day she will do fine on the LPGA tour after she matures and gives up the illusion of competing against men, the Masters, the Ryder Cup, and consistently carrying the ball 290 yards off the tee. In regards to your first post, good prediction....again.

JR,

Bubbles is a unique case. Since she has already been paid millions upon millons of dollars without winning a professional event, I do not think you will hear her admit to playing poorly any time soon. Her statements to the press are either going to be positive, or they will be loaded with excuses for playing poorly. I actually do not blame her for this. It would not be politically correct for her to admit that she as been playing poorly for the past 13 months when Nike and Sony just paid her $20 million about 2 years ago.

Even the most enthusiastic Wie Warrior, even a guy like Stanley, would surely have to admit, however grudgingly, that Bubbles has had a dismal 2007.

So far this year, Bubbles has played in six sanctioned events on the women's circuit. On some, she was exempt by virtue of her 2006 placings, and in others she received sponsors' exemptions.

In all, she has played a total of 257 holes, or slightly more than fourteen rounds. She id 82 over par, with only one sub par round of 71, one under, one par round, and the rest over par with several 80 or poorer.

She hasn't shot a round in competition of 70 or better in more than thirteen months.

Her record this year reads as follows:
Two withdrawals after being a total of 31 over par.
Two made cuts with finishes of T69th, 16 shots over par and 20 strokes from the lead, and a solo 84th, 21 over par and 35 strokes from the lead, and 10 shots behind the second last player.
Two missed cuts where she never came close to making the cut.

Now here's the part that is so incomprehensible, that an act of congress is needed to rectify the injustice.

Bubbles was the first to receive an invitation to the elite 20 player field of the Samsung in October. She got her invitation immediately after Lorena who is the defending champion

The Samsung is supposed to be a very limited field event, reserved for prior year champions and those non-winners high on the money list.

Bubbles has won the spectacular amount of $9899 this year, but things may be looking up for her.

If she has the chutzpah to actually accept this undeserved invitation, she will far exceed her winnings for the year since the lowest placing at the Samsung will bank about $12,000.

If the Wie camp has even the slightest modicum of humility and sense of fairness, they will graciously decline going to the Samsung in deference to a more dererving golfer.
PermalinkPermalink 08/18/07 @ 09:02
Comment from: smudge [Visitor]
Alex, why would Bubbles and her camp decline. I mean the new Nike slogan is "There's a fine line to being crap and being a superstar". The next "just do it". So according to Bubbles she is playing great and is deserving. Just a couple putts missed here and there and a couple shots that didn't go the way she wanted them. Put those together and she will be lapping the field.

Bubbles certainly does not deserve to be playing at the Samsung. However, her sponsors exemptions and invitations may start to be drying up (I do not think Annika will be extending her an invitation to the Ginn Open in 08). As she loses more and more of her press and large followings, she will be getting fewer opportunities to compete unless she does decide to become a member of the LPGA. So, I seriously doubt she will be declining any invitations in the near future, even though she has not business playing in the Samsung.
PermalinkPermalink 08/18/07 @ 11:21

smudge,

It would be a decent and equitable gesture on the part of Bubbles and her camp to decline the ill-advised invitation to the Samsung. Her poor performances this year and in the last half of 2006, would preclude her playing in an event that advertises itself as the "fifth major", as well as the World Championship.

Do I think she and her entourage will take the high road and decline? Not really.

Unless some sudden sense of guilt hits the greedy BJ and Bo Wie and their hubristic daughter, look for her to tee it up at the 2007 Samsung.

The irony and injustice of it is that she will be taking the spot in the tournament that by rights should go to a recent winner on the LPGA tour or a golfer in the top ten on the money list or both.

Didn't MW decline the invite about a month or so ago? I thought I read that somewhere. Lately, I've been suffering from CRS. Anyways, if that is not the case, then she most definitely should decline. On a seperate note... where have all of MW's fair weather fans gone. I thought for sure Jennifer M, Gheet Rheel, and the host of others would atleast appear to stick by her during MW's "13 month slump"...

The S.W.C still has Wie-Wee listed as 'in the field'. Simply pathetic. I say, "Boycott Samsung" (along with Nike). If Wie-Wee plays, it is no longer a "Champion"-ship event. Wie-Wee is not a Champion. She is nothing more than a loser. There are far more players 'deserving' a spot at the S.W.C. than Wie-Wee.

John D, JR, Lance R, Coolio, et al,

It has been asked on this board why the Wie Warriors such as Stanley, Jim C, Norman and all the rest seem to have deserted Bubbles in her time of need.

One of two reasons are probably the answers.

Perhaps these unrepentant Wie-wee's have seen the light, some sort of epiphany. They may have come to the obvious conclusion that their idol is nothing more than an over-hyped, ganfly teenage golfer, one with a certain amount of talent which as yet has to be tapped.

The other scenario, one which is much more likely, is that they are waiting for something, anything, which they can construe as positive to be done by Bubbles.

Just two weeks ago, Stanley had nothing but praise for the way Bubbles played the Evian and the first round of the Ricoh. He saw those rounds as proof that Bubbles' golf game was improving by leaps and bounds, and he even said confidently that she would contend for the title at the Canadian Open.

With the continuance of her lackluster game at Edmonton, even Stanley, Wie Warrior numero uno, is at a loss for words to explain her woes.

But never think that they won't be back with a vengeance if she should do something positive, like make a cut.

Remember how Stanley praised Bubbles raw courage when she made the cut on the number at the LPGA championship? Of course, it required major backing up of the late finishers and the final player on the course to bogey her last two holes, but to Stanley that was a great accomplishment. Her dead last finish by ten shots he conveniently neglected to mention.

If she starts at Portland on Thursday and somehow makes the cut, look for the Wie-wee's to be on the comeback trail.

Yes Alex,

Bubbles is listed to be in the field at the State Farm Classic next week in Portland. The field of golfers is very similar to the field that is in Canada this week. If she fails to make the cut, then she will have back to back to back missed cuts on the LPGA, which I am sure is unprecedented. If she makes the cut, our blogs will be joined by all the Wie-wees who will claim that her wrist has healed and have optimistic forecasts for the remaining part of 2007. Although I would rather see Bubbles fail to make the cut, I do miss sparring with some of the Wie-wees like Stanley and the overly iracibe Putt4par.

It will be interesting to see if she can make the cut next week. I do not know if she is capable right now of putting two great rounds together (below or at par). She has consistently been shooting one very good round followed by one not so good round. This week was a little different, both rounds were decent, but not good enough in the tuff field of players that she is playing against to make the cut.

Bubbles downward spiral has taken an interesting twist. Against the men in the PGA, all she wanted to do was make the cut. Now, ironically, that seems to be her goal in the LPGA.

Lance R,

After this week, I believe that Bubbles' last allowable event will be the Samsung. I think she will have used all her sponsors' exemptions.

If she does have the nerve to tee it up at the Samsung, she'll have three things going for her.

She won't have to worry about making the cut since there is none in that event,
she'll be certain to at least triple her winnings of any other tournament this year, and she'll be assured of a top twenty finish, her best of the year.

An interesting sidelight concerning the Samsung is that Bubbles was given a sponsor's exemption two weeks before she ever swung a club this year in an LPGA tournament, and four months after she had played her last round of competitive golf, her missed cut at the Sony.

The executive committee of the Samsung must have thought that Bubbles was going to play some sterling golf for the remainder of the year instead of tanking as she has.
PermalinkPermalink 08/19/07 @ 11:28
Comment from: Lance R. [Visitor]
Alex,

The executive committee of the Samsung probably did not expect her to play as poorly as she has to this point, but all the signs were there when they made their selection. She had finished dead last at two consecutive men's events and second or third to last at two others. Additionally, she had placed 17th out of 20 at their own event in 2006. I think the primary reason for her selection this year was that the committee counts on her bringing large crowds. But I think that this is the last year that she will be receiving these "gifts" unless she starts performing a little better than she has. If and when these large galleries quit following her, I think she will be receiving less and less free passes.

Speaking of drying up, there are hardly any Wie blogs these days. I hope we have somewhere to post next week as it will probably be Wie's last performance for a while.
