Mayfair diagnosed with cancer, US Women's Amateur and Ryder Cup standings

Tuesday August 8, 2006 | 02:16:19 pm 73 words, 3133 views

PGA pro Billy Mayfair was diagnosed earlier this week with testicular cancer and has undergone surgery in Arizona.

Local favorite Paige Mackenzie is one of three women atop the leaderboard at the U.S. Women’s Amateur after shooting a 69. 16-year old Ming Jung Hur and Margaret Shirley also shot 69s.

Only two events remain before the U.S. Ryder Cup team is chosen. Standings have been updated following this past weekend’s Buick Open.

Remember that Mayfair's childhood golfing buddy, Heather Farr, died from breast cancer as a young touring professional. Eerie coincidence.

Billy

If you pick this up - very best wishes from Gullane, Scotland

I played my very best round of competitive golf - a two over 72 - ever after discovering testicular cancer last year - just days before my operation . Next time you are come to Muirfield in Scotland let me know and I'll take you round Gullane GC ( www.gullanegolfclub.com ) we can share stories - maybe even a two ball foursome !!

Go on - win the USPGA - that would even out do Lance Armstrong !
