A great story. Matt Hasselbeck seems to be one of not many NFL top players with a good sense of humour and a down-to-earth approach to life.

Nice to see that, at the end of the day, you did not want to push things suggesting to go for a beer, and you did not ask for an autograph. I guess you will really remember the day as a perfect one.

Thanks for writing this article.

So the "darling" of the golf press thinks he can just skip the first part of the Playoffs? IS that in the rules? How about Phil waiting till the 3rd week to show up? IF this is truly a play off then the conceited Woods should be there for every hole. Who made him a god? Maybe the top ranked team next March for the NCAA will just wait to show up for the Final Four. We all know Tiger can't play more than 2 weeks in a row without 4 weeks off. I'm sorry he isn't up to it, but if he is so great then he should just suck it up and prove it.

What now Mr Meyers with your "Phil will win tour player of the year award over Tiger"?? Where is Mickelson now? He made a boboo in the US Open and never ever forgave himself. That is what I dont like with Phil Mickelson - he is not mentally tough enough to get over his past idiocies - he carries it with him to his next tournaments and disintegrates in front of the world.

This is a very interesting statement. You dont WANT him to win, you just want others to beat him...so you want him to stick around for years to come so he gets beaten by guys like Phil? WOW.

Wow, Mr. Meyers! Can't imagine how you are feeling about that Feb 16 column now; now that Tiger Woods has just won his 52nd PGA tournament. Which by the way now equals Byron Nelson's total. Oh, also by the way, Tiger admitted himself that he didn't bring his 'A' game. Heck, he played his 'c' game [wayward shot onto the clubhouse, 4 straight bogeys in the 3rd round, and losing a 3 shot lead in the final 3 holes]. He still won.

10 years ago he introduced himself entering the professional ranks as 'Hello, world'. He now seems to be saying, 'goodbye' to all of his competition. He was easily beatable last week, but no one choose to step up to the plate and beat him.

Now if you were to write a column about Mr. Phil 'milktoast' Milkenson being 'finished' - I wholeheartedly concur.

Tiger likes money...who does'nt? Tiger likes to win...who does'nt? In every sport there are the greats and then there are the one or two that shine above the rest and must always be the standard by which everyone is measured against. The only thing left for Eldrick to do is have a family and have everone say ... but Tiger had this many majors or this many wins or grand slammed this many times. Tiger makes money hand over fist already. Everyone still sez ..."but 'Jack' this or 'Nicklaus' that...". I'm sure deep down Tiger wants to win more so everyone sez...'Woods this or Tiger that'. Sit back and enjoy the ride!

I cant predict the future, and dont have the stones to usually try, so I appreciate bold predictions when I see them.

However, one thing I dont understand is the recent growing sentiment that Phil is now the best golfer in the world. (British Open notwithstanding). Dont you guys think that REALLY has to proven over a substantial time period considering what Tiger has showed us over his career? I dont even think we've seen Tiger's A-game for awhile. I recall when he was going through all his swing revamps...he was basically left for dead by critics and I had to wonder...are you people serious? Has Golf always been this knee jerk?

It's not about "sucking up" to Tiger as the Phil fan up top said, it's more about realistically looking over a long time period & using that against what you currently see. To me, Tiger has shown us some formidable feats that I cant quite write off asw a fluke. not yet anyway.

Another white guy hoping Phil is better. Tiger Woods has 11 majors , Phil Mickelson has 3 and Phil is 5 years old. I wouldnt call them rivals. As far as Phil being the Player of the Year, if Tiger doesnt play he probably will be but Tiger does play he wont. You see Phil Mickelson will be what white america is hoping , the best golfer in the world but Tiger must retire first.

Man all this blog does is pretty much does is bash Tiger Woods in a kind way. First of all Tiger Woods has no Rivals. Phil Mickelson isnt even in the same category as Tiger. Tiger has 11 majors to Phils 3. This is golf 11 - 3 , is like 55-0 in football, 125 -70 in basketball, 15-0 in baseball. Alot of times when people right about Tiger they try to first of start of by saying Im not anti Tiger. The guy if you listen to the media has been done or about to be done for the past 10 years of his career. But some how he has 11 majors. Man just say you dont want Tiger to win because hes black/asian/white , but its really the black part that gets you. Tiger is a black dude who dominates golf get over goodness. I guess you have to be "PC" but I have never seen a sportsman like Tiger Woods who wins as much as he does or as often and has went after the Records like he has get people talking so negative about him. I think its just plain ole racism.

Never have understood why on earth some think Mickelson is the best in the game in that Phil has had to really struggle to reach the #2 position, has not been there for that long, and will have to do a bit of work to maintain the distinction of being #2.

Even though Phil is a fabulous player and will probably win one or two more majors, if one examines the stats, Tiger is simply in a class by himself.

Golf doesn't take any physical skill. A baseball weigh's 5 pounds while a golf ball weigh's 1.3 pounds. So a baseball that is hit 400 ft(5 div 1.3)=1538/3 with wood is the same as hitting a golf ball 512 yards. Next a golf shot is determined where the ball rolls to and not where it lands. So hitting a golf ball with the same but opposite formula as above is the same as hitting a baseball with wood at 234 ft on a roll, so these golfers are not super athletes.

Finally, getting into professional golf tournaments requires nothing more then a $3,000 entry fee. So this is not like Arod joining the Yankees.

I feel like chicken fajitas, Vijay thought. It'd been a long day at Augusta, a very up and down round of golf, and he was hungry, and chicken fajitas sounded just about right to him.

He left the hotel alone, got in his Pontiac rental, and made his way to the local Chili's. His back ached, stuffing his long body in the crappy rental car. He turned on the radio, flipping from talk to country (which made him shake his head and laugh with a hint of disgust), and finally he settled on a station playing Nat King Cole songs for the hour. He could hear the crackle in the dusty old recordings.

Two double-bogeys, Vijay thought, I can't believe it. He drove into the night, and in front of him he could still see those hilly fairways, and complicated greens. The ridges and shelves and slopes and the ball breaking on an ever so perfect line, but not having enough speed.

After not a very long drive, he pulled into the Chili's parking lot. And as the bright neon glow of the exterior of the restaurant lit him up inside his rental car, he looked into the rear-view mirror to check his hair, and realized that he was still wearing his visor.

He took it off, and tried to shag out his hair. He went into Chili's and an overly friendly blonde hostess offered to seat him right away.

Just follow me, she said.

Vijay was in a daze walking through the restaurant, not seeing what was going on around him, just thinking about putting food in his stomach and a cold drink to his lips, when he heard the sound of his name.

"Vij."

"Hey, Vij."

He knew the voice, and it irritated him instantly, and made him bristle. Please tell me it's not him, he thought.

But it was. Sitting in a large corner booth, with a big, goofy, toothy grin on his face, surrounding by a couple of other players, and a few women hed never seen before, was Phil Mickelson.

Vijay simply waved, and was going to continue on to his own table, but the hostess said, "You want me to seat you with your friends?"

"No, that's okay," Vijay started to say, but before he could even get it all out of his mouth, Phil was waving him over.

"Come on, Vij, weve got a spot for you, big guy."

Freakin' Phil Mickelson, Vijay thought. Phil waved again, and Vijay lowered his head and resigned himself to follow the hostess over to the corner booth.

"Boy, that was a tough round today, huh?" Phil said, sounding like a little boy who'd never played professional men's golf before.

Vijay just nodded. Phil went on to introduce everyone. Tammy, and Pam, and Amber, and Vijay was half expecting one of them to be named Bambi, but the other one was Susie, and Ernie Els was there too, grinning like a retarded man. Freddie Couples was slouched off to the side, looking relaxed enough to be drugged, and Retief Goosen rounded out the pro foursome, expressionless.

Vijay ordered his chicken fajitas, but the simple joy he had expected to take in ordering and devouring them had faded, and it took a very long time for them to come out of the kitchen. The conversation at the table grinded in his head like metal gears that needed to be greased.

I'd love to see a before and after of the look on your face now compared to what it will look like when you're fucking up the back nine on Sunday, Phil, Vijay thought. But he also knew that Phil was good, very good, and he could win. And so could everyone else at the table, and for that he had to respect them.

He was contemplating an exit strategy when a booming, impossibly confident voice suddenly drew the chatter to a close.

"Hey, I thought I saw some faggots over in the corner," Tiger said, leaning on Ernies shoulders, and then squeezing and massaging them. Everyone laughed, but they laughed the way people laugh when they have to in front of a boss or a bully.

Tiger grinned largely, and you could tell he wasnt going to stay. He had his own close-knit crew to hang with. But before he left, he scanned the table. Like a hawk, deciding if he should swoop down and eat something. Then he saw Vijay, and stopped smiling.

"Vijay, I didnt expect to see you sitting here," Tiger said, and smiled again, grabbing a French fry and stuffing it into his mouth.

Vijay smiled back, and nodded a few times, almost chuckling to himself.

"I didnt either."
