Tiger Woods smackdown of Rory Sabbatini

Monday August 6, 2007 | 05:24:35 pm 510 words, 6438 views

When will these guys learn? Don’t tick off Tiger Woods! Don’t even think you are in the same league, just be glad to take second place money. When Tiger is in full form, all cylinders, smooth take away and transition into his downswing, his shot making is so perfect, he can run away with any tournament, and most of the PGA know it. So, what in the world is a punk like Sabbatini thinking when he “calls out” the worlds No. 1?

He reminds me of the loudmouth punks back in high school, who would try to trash talk their way into trying to mess with my mind playing sports. Good players don’t need to trash talk, or as they say today, talk smack. Good players just play and see what happens. IT would seem to me that RS was trying to talk himself into it, that he could somehow convince himself that, “yeah, Tiger is beatable now.” Or under his breath, “I hope he is beatable now.”

Hmmm…Stephen Ames…creamed 9-8 after some unsavory comments.
Sergio, creamed after some “sure, he can be beat” type comments.
Phil, don’t know if we will ever see him in the winners circle of a major again, with Tiger in the field.
Chris DiMarco…not up to the task.
Adam Scott…still looking for his heart.
Ernie, doesn’t even go there.

The only two guys I see on the PGA Tour that have the game and the guts to go after Tiger are Jim Furyk, and Padraig Harrington and maybe we can throw in Angel Cabrera.

Listen to Tiger describe his “self talk” and see how totally positive and calculated it is:

WOODS: Well, I thought … after the start … we all birdied 1, and then I got one there at 2 and then I birdied 4. When I birdied 4, as you said, it was a two-shot swing, but the way I looked at the way Rory was playing, he made two good saves at 2 and 3 just to be where he was at, and if I just … I felt if I could just keep putting the pressure on him, keep hitting fairways, keep hitting greens, keep giving myself a lot of looks at them, I could put a lot of pressure on him because he didn’t look all that comfortable with his swing today. He looked like he was making some putts just keeping himself in it. I wanted to put some pressure on him because I felt I was swinging the club well, and if I could give myself some looks I could put some pressure on him.”

Total awareness of both what he needed to do, and the state of mind of his opponent(s).

Compare that to the pathetic whining from Sergio as he gave away the Open Championship at Carnoustie just a few weeks ago. The scar tissue is growing in that young man’s mind, and I don’t see how he can undo the damage he is doing to himself.

Man, do I love to watch Tiger work. It is just plain inspiring. Thanks.

I think that people are a wee bit zealous in their labeling of Rory and co. as "punks," etc. He didn't say anything off-color, nor insult Tiger's family, nor suggest that Tiger himself is, say, insufficient in any way. Just because no one has planted the seed of doubt in Tiger's mind and survived, does not mean that it will not eventually work. Smack talking in pro golf does not compare to true smack talking, and it is worthless to compare the fairway with the hardcourt with the street.

Come on Ron...he was a wreck out there...he couldn't have beaten Tiger if Tiger broke his Driver and 5 iron. 9 shots bro. 9 shots. Give me 9 shots, I could beat YOU!

Trash talk - you get two shots. After a while it just looks pathetic.

The difference between Sabbatini and Ames comes down to this,

Ames trash talked him, got beaten.
His comment was: well, I trash talked him and he trashe me at which point Ames laughed and walked away.

Sabbatini on the other hand... Swearing at the gallery? Lets just say the Stepehen Ames showed a whole lot more class than Sabbatini did.

Tiger? Class all the way, no trash talk, just take out the sticks and talk from there.

Good article, CB. Sounds like you and I were raised the same way - try to play with class. All of the pre-round talk from Sabbatini sounded as if he was trying to convince himself that he could beat Tiger. Now, if he would've just said something like "if I play well, I believe I can beat Tiger", that would've been okay. But you've got to acknowledge the mountain you're trying to climb, at least internally. Otherwise you're just lying to yourself and will never reach your goals. The best attribute that all of the greats have is the ability to be brutally honest about their game as well as their opponents. It shapes everything from what to work on and how to play either an opponent or the course.

You hit it right on the head. Especially calling Sabatini a punk. Look what he did with the golfer that was playing to slow for his liking in a PGA event a couple years ago. These guys have to stop whining and realize this might be the grewatest individual to ever play the game and enjoy the ride.

When Bob Jones wrote, "A good part of the game is played between the ears; meaning that judgment, based on thought and experience, is often as important as mechanical skill," Jones must have foreseen Tiger.

Ron Mon...Ron MOn!!!

Sabbatini is from South Africa !!! Doesn't that ring a bell of what has been going on in that country forever?????!!!!! Wake up and come back to reality. During the post tournament interview, Sabbatini never gave Tiger credit for kicking his ass. He mentioned that HE did not perform as HE would have liked...besides, TIGER made several "miracle shots" to beat him. Well, those miracle shots would have happened if Sabbatini made them.

I totally agree CB.
The tour needs personality, but Rory might be harming himself than helping himself. Even if he had beat Tiger, or if he does beat him at the PGA, his comments felt way too silly.

I totally understand having confidence in your abilities, but theres no need to rate other players 'beat-ability'. Ultimately you are you biggest competition in golf

If I'm not mistaken, in their pre-game interviews,
Verplank understood that you don't talk "trash" to
Tiger. He said he hoped Tiger didn't "mistake him
for Rory" today. Ogilvy obviously didn't get the
memo and I believe that he just hinted that Tiger
is beatable by those close in the field.
Well, Geoff, "keep hope alive".

You are right. At work we use Tiger as the model; no big talk, just big performance. Preparation, preparation, preparation and then execution. Rory is an idiot with a big ass mouth.

Tiger is the #1 player, no question. But on any given day he can be beaten...as history shows that.

Why is it so wrong for golvers to talk little trash when in others like boxing it's almost a must? It's the spirit of competition. It makes as wanting to see who win.

O, and yes, RS comes from South Africa so do others like Gary Player, Ernie, Retief ..... Don't through Apartheid in Rory's face, its before his time and he also has nothing to do with the current reverse discrimination.

Later on in life Tiger Woods records will speak for themselves and most likely it will be hard to find anyone who will remember how to spell Sabatini much less recall his lack of greatness.
The name Woods, Nicklaus, Palmer, Sneed, Jones, Player and Watson and Sabatini ? I think not.

Rory,
you could not caddy for Tiger, much less compete with him on his level.
Grow up and just play your game..You may do well on the senior tour.

Senior Tour? How about LPGA Tour! Rory, you couldn't even interview Tiger Woods. Tiger could beat you in a round of golf if he used only a croquet mallet.
