My comments on Tom Pernice Jr. notwithstanding, here are Tiger’s own words from the opening round of interviews at the HSBC Championships in China:
TIGER WOODS: As far as not playing the Tour Championship, it’s been a long year. I played, had some things happen earlier in the year and took some time off during that and then played seven out of nine weeks with a two-day stint in Ireland for practice rounds with our Ryder Cup Team and I was basically just tired. I needed some time off to get away from the game a little bit. It was nice. I figured the way I ended the season was pretty good.
I had a nice little run to end the season, so I just wanted to take some time off and get focused and be ready for this event. And I have three tournaments right in a row here coming up and just wanted to make sure I was playing well coming to this event. Hopefully I can put it together this week and continue what I’ve been what I was doing prior to my time off.
Pernice attacked Tiger’s character and his commitment to the Tour. Here he is supporting the beginning of the European Tour at this global golf event. Anyone got a problem with that?
A lot of folks and my readers included have found some subversive motives in Tiger’s “rest” and my point is; why can’t we take him at his word? The guy doesn’t appear to have a deceptive bone in his body. He may guard his “Privacy” but who wouldn’t in his position? He prepares for play better than anyone, and my sense is he just wanted to be ready, not just go through the motions at the Tour Championship…for a check. I mean, Davis Love III shot hacker scores and took home over $100,000. Is that what we would expect from Tiger?
So, all I have to say is: Thanks Tiger, I appreciate you speaking up on my behalf!
